The name "Catherine" has many variations all over European languages.

Catriona (Italian), Caterina (Greek), Kaatje, Katya, Catrin (Welsh), Caitrin, Catharina, Ekaterina (Russian), etc.

I think some of those ethnic versions are pretty. Catharina is nice, I knew a South African woman named Mimie Catharina.

A friend of mine is having twins and wants to use a variation of this name. Her 2 yr old is named Victoria and she wants to name all the girls after Queens. She has chosen Elizabeth and Kathryn for the twins. I'm trying to convince her to use the Catherine spelling, but she doesnt want it to have 3 syllables. (All the girls names will have 7 syllables total and all middle names will start with J. Her last name has 2 syllables.) I just like the Catherine spelling esp with the reference to queens.

Anyway, interesting post for me since we have been talking about this name quite a bit! I love some of the other ethnic variations, too.

Most people who say Catherine say it with two syllables anyway. Depends who and how fast or slow they're talking. I say it both ways myself.

yes that is part of my argument for that spelling! :) She really likes the theme (motif?) of naming them after queens. I don't recall a queen spelled Kathryn and I think she will regret changing that.

I'm anti-theme when it comes to naming, but my favorite names happen to be mostly queens (or Biblical). I would love to have a sister Elizabeth for my Catherine someday.

Also helps that Catherine and Elizabeth are my grandmother and my husband's. Those names just go so well together.

Thank you! I've heard several times "that's a first name for a middle name...."

My daughter (Catherine Juliet) approves.

One of the things I like about C/Katherine is how easily translatable into other languages it is.

OH! How cool!

We have a *Very* Italian last name, with Italian heritage and two Italian names siblings, so Juliet went first :)

Juliet is a gorgeous name. We seriously considered it for a first name.

Catriona is Scottish; Caterina is what Italians use (St Caterina of Siena is a patron saint of Italy).
