Nicknames

It will still be a good 3-4 months before I find out the sex of my baby but, if it's a boy, my baby daddy is dead set on naming him Lachlan (after his grandfather). Now, I don't think it's a horrible name but it's certainly not high on my list either.. and with his last name (MacEachern), it just sounds way too Scottish. So I'm curious if anyone knows of any nicknames for Lachlan, other than the obvious "Lach/Lock?"

I really like Lachlan! You could call him Lan, maybe. I can see that working. Also, depending on his middle name, you could call him by his initials. A friend of mine in high school was named Donald Thomas, and everyone calls him DT. I think LT sounds really cool; maybe Lachlan Thomas? I think it flows really well with his last name.

I thought about the first and middle initial thing but his middle name will start with an E (Elis.. Ellis.. Ellise? I'm not sure of the spelling, again it's a family name on my bd's side) and LE just doesn't seem to flow. It's not even so much that I don't like the name but I've had a few people say he would get made fun of for it and what not.. so I'm more concerned about avoiding potential grief from his peers than anything. I personally don't find Lachlan a name that warrants teasing but I don't want to doom my child either!

I don't think Lachlan is going to be a problem. I mean, he might get one or two people who make a comment, but it's more of a... "rugged" unique name, you know what I mean? It's not like you're naming him Marion, because it's unique, which WOULD cause a lot of teasing.

What about Lee? For LE? I don't know, maybe I'm reaching, but I think it would work. I like Lach/Lock, though, as a nickname. I think that one works.

You could call him by whatever middle name you choose. Or maybe 'Mac' after his last name.

Ahh! Of course.. Mac! I'm not so worried about coming up with a nickname for me to call him but more so his peers. I forgot though that boys do tend to call friends by their last names so Mac or MacEachern will probably be much of what he hears growing up. However... then the nickname "Big Mac" becomes a concern haha.. I guess there's no surefire way to avoid name teasing.. if they want to, kids will come up with something no matter what the name is.

Wow, I'm surprisingly in favor of Lachlan. At any rate, doooon't worry too much about teasing! My name is Janine--that could spur SO MUCH bad stuff, Mean Janine, Queen Janine, blah blah, and honestly no one ever picked up on anything.

Anyway, if you're going to call him Mac and are worrying about "Big Mac," you call him that first, like jokingly and all and in a cute little-kid way. Then when he encounters it again he can just laugh about it rather than being offended.

That's a good idea. Although, if I have my way, my child won't even know what a Big Mac is until they're old enough to kick some ass lol. That's probably just wishful thinking though.. McDonalds/fast food is bigger than god.

I used to know a guy named Lachlan, and I always figured it was his last name, and people just called him by that. But, I guess it was his first. He was a pretty cool guy, so I guess I'm a bit biased when I say I like it.

I remember reading a book a while back where the main character was named Lachlan and they called him Lee. I think Lachlan is a sweet handsome name :) Good luck and Congratulations!

Lachlan MacEachern does sound incredibly scottish lol. to me, it doesn't flow right... how exactly do you pronounce the last name? maybe i am saying it wrong.

The last name is said.... "Ma-cack-ern" or "Ma-cack-rin," depending on who you ask. There's probably a better way to break it down but that's the best I could come up with haha.

I've only known one Lachlan in my life, and he was a pretty cool guy, along being quite the charmer with the ladies, haha. So whenever I hear the name, I always just envision a guy who everybody likes.

He didn't get called any nicknames except of course things like, Lockity-Lock or Lock, but nothing cruel.

I think it's a memorable, nice name.

I know a Lachlan, and we call him Lochie. He's about 40 or 50 now, and he's been called Lochie most of his life w/out any teasing.

My surname is MacEachern, btw, so I'm a bit biased towards Scottish baby names! (:
