Given this group's penchent for names that are unusual but not creative (or kre8v), I was wondering what people thought of using names from fantasy novels. I've noticed that a lot of them use names from the ordinary world, typically just changed a little bit.

My favorites are:

Jimothi- from Clive Barker's Abarat, the first in the series, the ruler of the Tarry cats is a man-sized Tarry Cat named Jimothi.
Karigan- from Kristen Britain's First Rider series. The man character's name is Karigan G'ladheon.
Arya- from George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. The younger of the Stark daughters. There's tons of good names from this series, too. Joffrey, Theon, Cersei, Rickon, Rodrik, Jorah, Irri, Doreah...

There are others, but I wanted your opinion on the idea in general.

I generally don't support names from fantasy novels, because like in your examples, they recall too closely a legit name, and therefore sound like a kr8v variation of it (Joffrey for Jeffrey, Doreah for Dora, Rodrik for Roderick etc).

When that's not the case, they're generally too out-there to be people's names, like Irri or Cersei, unless they happen to be a legit name in some language.

There are some exceptions though, for example Arya is pretty fine by me, it looks like a cross between some arabic name and the name/word Aria in italian (meaning 'air').

So I'd say generally it's a thumbs down for me, with rare exceptions.

Cersei looks like a kry8v3 version of Circe (sir-say). Circe is a figure in Greek mythology. She is a goddess/sorceress, daughter of Helios and Perse. She turned those who offended her into various animals.

Circe is also the name of a friends older sister. Middle name is Andromeda. :D

Irri reminds me of clouds.

As long as they are not too weird, it's fine in my opinion. Jorah & Arya are kinda pretty :)
But names like Jimothy really annoy me, because it seems like a typo or like the parents tried to hard to come up with something different but didn't have much fantasy. You know what I mean? ;)
Maybe this is just because I don't mind unusual names in general, I don't know :)

Karigan isn't bad, but reminds me of Nancy Kerrigan, the figure skater. oh & in the movie Casper, the mean lady was named Karigan (unsure of the spelling) lol
Arya is cute, i don't mind it.

Jorah reminds me of the multi armed blue guy that guards a tower in the game MajorMUD... LOL

My personal favorites are Inara from Firefly (I like Jayne on a boy, too), Kisten from the Rachel Morgan series, and Phedre from the Kushiel series (but its a real name).

I love the names Meliara and Branaric (from Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel), Cadvan and Maerad (from Alison Croggon's Pellinor series), and I could go on and on...

I'll post some more later if I can think of them Brain isn't working right now...
