Trees!

I teach a primary class at my church every Sunday. We had a couple visitors this last weekend. Two little girls, right around the same age. I'm assuming they're sisters - possibly fraternal twins. They were both wearing the cutest little blue and white checked dresses, black shoes, and white sweaters.

One had long slightly curly red hair - her name is Willow.

The other had shorter dark brown hair. Her name? Sequoia.

Willow is pretty common. I've known tons of people named willow. But Sequoia? Her parents must love trees. I'm not quite sure what I think of it. For being a fairly short name, it's quite a mouthful, but it seemed to suit her. Of course, having an unusual name myself, I felt a pang of sympathy.

What do you think?

All of the name-tagged-with-pronunciation-keys kids give her a moment of silence.

Actually, as far as unusual names go, that one isn't bad. I mean, I wouldn't name a kid that, but whoever does and it actually fits the kid, then I say go for it.

I like Willow, but I'm definitely not a fan of Sequoia. I guess it could be worse, but...no.

Ridiculous. Why must they be themed?

Could be worse, though. I once met sisters named Brie and Colby. As bad as being the "tree family" is, being the "cheese family" is worse.

Hey she can brag that her name uses every vowel! I agree, it could be worse. At least it is a word most people are familiar with and can pronounce. Yeah what euphrasie said lol ;)

So what other trees have you seen/heard as names? Willow, Sequoia, Aspen, Birch (terribly close to bitch and I feel sooo sorry for the girl with this name.) Any others out there?

I knew a girl named Alder. It fit her and I think it sounds nice. I also knew a guy who changed his last name to Pine so his name was Jeffery Pine (an actual type of pine tree!)

Birch is so bad! I'd take Sequoia any day!

It's a guilty pleasure name for me. I love the nature associations/imagery. I love the sound. I love the fact that it contains one of each vowels and a Q to boot.

I think it's cheesy paired with another tree name though.

I went to school with an Acacia....who had a brother named Chad. Parents wanted a tree theme.

They're okay... could be worse. I love trees, but I don't think I'd go as far as naming my kids after them. Maybe as a middle name.

Two biology professors at my small university have daughters named Acacia and Sequoia. I really like both names actually. I love Willow as it is my cat's name though.

Hmm...those are kinda pretty, especially together.
Willow sounds like my hair. XD Anyway, Sequoia is interesting. I won't say I don't like it. There are other tree names I'd pick first though...like Juniper or something...
