(no subject)

i don't think i would actually use it or anything, but one last name that is quite prevalent in both my mom's and my dad's ancestry is Spalding (yeah they're like 9th cousins, but that's not important right now).  what do you guys think of that as a first/middle name for a guy?  i don't think i like it a whole lot (balding spalding comes to mind), but the whole 9th cousin thing is kind of interesting. could you think of any reasonable nicknames?

It's...eh, okay. But what automatically comes to mind for me is the sporting equipment. I don't know, that could potentially cause some problems if he's either really good or really bad at sports.

It could be a hell of a lot worse, though.

What about just using it as a middle name?

Spalding reminds me of the actor Spalding Gray who committed suicide a few years ago.

I can't think of any good nicknames for it.

I don't think I like it, either. Besides the sporting equipment, it makes me think of a kid I used to know with the last name Spalding. That kid was really annoying, so it's not the best connotation.

I can't think of any nicknames, either.

Mostly it just makes me think of tennis rackets.

I thought about sporting goods immediately. I don't really think it's useable and I can't think of any nicknames, really. Paul's about it but... uh... why not just name a kid Paul? ;-)

"Dingo" maybe?

Or perhaps one of those 'S' nicknames like Sparky, Spanky, Spud, or something?

Or, I guess they could have a middle name and use the middle name. I know people who do that. If it's a family name they go with the first name for tradition and then the middle name as the real name.

Or, use it as a middle name instead of a first name?

Someone with a name like that would possibly wind up with a nickname not based on their actual name. In school they would probably go by their last name or get some kind of name based off of the brand like "Racket" or "Ten(nis)" or something like that.

I knew a guy who had Spaulding as a last name, and was forever teased about sporting goods. I know know why though - its not like it is that embarassing or funny...

Spalding just doesn't strike me as a first name.

nooo

a)sports equipment, specifically volley balls
b) "balding"
c)sounds like it should be the name of a horrible soap opera character

mmhmm. The only nick-names I can think of are "Spaldy" and "Dingy". Not really ideal.
