According to The Baby Name Wizard, Tamsin is a common nickname for Thomasin(a), both are female forms of Thomas, are real names, and haven't been in the top 1000 in the last couple hundred years in the US. Even though they're not my style, they're good names (assuming you're using them for a girl).
Tamsin doesn't seem too far from other girl names that are "trendy", like Ainsley or Katelyn, so a little Tamsin would have no trouble fitting in. Thomasin may be a little tougher for some to like, but Tamsin could be a good nickname.
I was thinking Tamsin could be used as a nickname for Thomasin, if not a proper name itself. I don't like Tommie or Tami for a nickname, but Tamsin I like.
I admit it's somewhat oldfashioned and uncommon, but I don't mind, as long as it's not too hard to spell.
Old fashioned + uncommon + no negative associations (like Mildred or Gertrude) = a really good, solid name, IMO. Add that it has a cute nickname that fits in with classmates along with a more formal version, and you've hit gold. Go for it!
