[identity profile] queen-mab.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I really wanted to share some of the new names from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with everyone. Since this post is very spoilerific, I've kept it under a cut for those who haven't finished reading the book yet. It would be great if others would also keep anything Deathly Hallows-related under wraps as well.

Helena (Ravenclaw) - The Gray Lady and Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter. I always liked this name and now I think I like it even more.
Albus Severus - I giggled out loud when I read this. The name of one of Harry and Ginny's kids, after Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape. While I found it touching that they used these names in honor of the characters, the first thing I said in my head was "wow, that does not flow at all," haha. Albus Severus Potter. Good thing many people in the wizarding world have funny, ridiculously Latin names, or this kid would have been made fun of hardcore.
James - Another of Harry's sons after Harry's father, of course. One of my favorite names ever and it will be the name of one of my future sons, if I have any.
Lily - After Lily's mom. Very pretty and feminine name. I used to adore it, but it's gotten so popular.
Hugo - Hehe, Hermione and Ron's son. I think it's cute. Random, but cute. I wish they would have gone for Fred, though. Those have read Deathly Hallows will understand why.
Rose - Ron and Hermione's daughter. Always loved this name, though I like alternates like Rosalind and Rosalie better just because they're used less.
Scorpius - Draco's son. Unusual and somewhat sinister. But hey, it's a Malfoy kid, they all get those kind of names. Lucius, Narcissa, Draco, and now Scorpius. It's slightly unfortunate but still appropriate.
Victoire - French, because of it being Fleur and Bill's daughter. I much prefer Victoria, I will admit.
Ted/Teddy - Lupin and Tonks named him after Tonks' father who died in the war, so I understand why they chose it. I wish they would have went for a full Edward or Theodore, though.
Ariana - Dumbledore's sister's name. I think it's pretty. Slightly odd next to Albus and Aberforth, though.
Kendra - Dumbledore's mom's name. She would have had to have been born about 200 years ago, so this name struck me as odd. I picture it on little girls, since it's become popular only recently.

Anyway... thoughts?

I love Lily, and am trying to talk my fiance into Liliana if we have another little girl. I don't think I'm going to win. I like Rose, and agree with you on Victoria.

But the biggest point I agree with you on is that I wish Hermione and Ron had a son named Fred.

I agree! Maybe George eventually got married and had a son. He certainly would have named his son Fred. Or maybe Percy?

I know it says "Ted" specifically in the books, but perhaps Lupin even then was shortening it to Ted.

Kendra's actually a pretty old name. It's one of my favorites.

he says the baby's full name is teddy remus lupin, so i don't think he was shortening it from theodore or anything.

I think Rose and Hugo sound nice together. Albus Severus is hilarious.

kendra was weird to me too, as i've only ever known one kendra, my younger cousin, and everyone thought it was weird when my uncle named her that, so i was like woah, kendras an old name?

I'm considering naming my kids Lilian (call her Lily though), Ginevra, and Remus. I love Sirius, but it sounds like Serious, so....

also, I adored deathly hallows, it was wonderful.

ps. i agree on ron and hermione, i wish they'd picked names with meaning, like fred. i also wish harry had in some way named one of his kids remus or sirius, though i suppose we don't know james's middle name.

I've always liked names like Lily and Rose, and I had a friend in high school named Kendra.
Slightly OT, but the epilogue made me cringe.

Yeah, I was disappointed by the epilogue...

I also didn't understand why he named his son Albus Severus, but didn't name any kids after Sirius or Remus. That didn't make sense to me.

the epilogue totally sounded like a fanfic... she could have done so much better with it ;.; maybe just hints or something? lol

I would have been happy with a bulleted list of what happened to everyone, if nothing else! There were so many people that she didn't talk about that I really wanted to know about (the rest of the Weasleys for example).

Read her recent interviews. She wrote the epilogue 1) a long time ago, before she even wrote the later books, and 2) deliberately vague. She explains in her interviews what happens to some of the other characters (Luna, for example, becomes the Wizarding equivalent of a naturalist).

I've read her most recent interviews, and I realize she deliberately left it vague (I mean, the vagueness of it in the book was a tip-off), I was just personally hoping for more information instead of having to wait to hear it in interviews or wait for her possible HP Encyclopedia. If you hadn't heard, she's also going to do a live chat at this site, as well: http://livechat.bloomsbury.com/index.php

I absolutely LOVE the name Ginny but I don't like either Ginevra or Virginia. I'm thinking I like it best as a nickname to Genevieve.

I also love Ariana (though I prefer Ari), Teddy and Lily.

I really hate Albus Severus because they both end in -us, but I think the reason behind the name is cute enough to make up for it.

I think she chose Rose and Hugo because they start like Ron and Hermione. LOL.

I hated the epilogueeee.

Agreed. The epilogue was totally unnecessary.

Date: 2007-07-25 08:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com
I think it was VERY necessary. You didn't want to know what happened to everyone???

Date: 2007-07-25 08:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] silver05.livejournal.com
There was a much better way to let us know what happened than that saccharine nonsense. It made more questions than it answered.

I see your point, but I love sugary/corny. Then again - I'd love a book about those 19 years, too.

I wasn't sure if that was confirmed or not; last I read it was rumor.

Thanks!

She said in an interview that she almost definitely will. I was unsatisfied with the epilogue, I wanted WAY more information. I would have been happier with a bulleted list of how everyone ended up.

That news was exactly what I wanted to hear!
Except for the Severus thing that got to me, I was as dissatisfied by the epilogue as everyone else. Wanted loads of info on *everybody* of course. But I guess we'll get that! :D

I also thought that James' middle name would be Sirius. I guess if they had any more boys they could honor Remus too. Or someone from Ginny's side. They just have way too many people worthy of naming a kid for...xD

From: [identity profile] bornto-fly.livejournal.com
I agree with [livejournal.com profile] silver05 in her comment below. It would have been much better if she'd ended it when they were 17 and left the rest up to our imagination. She could have hinted that Ginny and Harry were together, and that Hermione and Ron were, but it was just...ugh. Way too corny. And it didn't even really tell us what happened, just that they were with the people they were at Hogwarts, and that's not really what the books were about. I was more interested in finding out if Harry become an Auror, what Hermione decided to do with her talents and intelligence, etc. etc. etc.

I couldn't care less who married who, or who had how many kids, or what they named their kids. It was boring and corny and unnecessary.

Date: 2007-07-25 09:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com
I totally see what you mean. I too would have liked info about the world, their careers, etc. But I was most excited to see the marriages and kids.

I'd like to think Harry was an Auror and Hermione was a Healer. :)

Fanfiction is for the corny stuff. Thats what I thought the last chapter was -- fanfiction. Ugh.

Kendra has roots in mythology, but I can't remember which culture. It actually might be something to do with King Arthur? I don't know. Don't quote me on that.

I love James, but I had the SAME THOUGHT about Albus Severus, hahaha.

I still think Severus Albus sounds [slightly] better, but that kid is sill going to mocked!
It had better've been James Sirius... and maybe Lily Fred? :D

I LOVE the name Ariana & Rose.
Edward & Theodore are both on my boys favourites, and now after reading DH I'm even warming to the nn Teddy...

Date: 2007-07-25 08:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com
I don't think he'll be mocked, after all, you've got people running around named Draco, Zacharias, Bellatrix, Mundungus, etc. etc. and no one seems to bat an eye, so when you think about it, Albus is pretty tame...

Aha, well when you put it in that context!

I had the same thought when I read the name Albus Severus! x) I disagree regarding naming one of the kids after Fred, though. I think Rose & Hugo sound nice together & would have been extremely annoyed if EVERY SINGLE KID was named in honor of someone who died. The kids are adorable, but there was more than enough name-honoring as is. There needed to be a few fresh names in the bunch, in my opinion.

I think they should leave the name Fred up for George if he wanted to use it... man, thats sad.. just talked about these characters like they were real...

For Lily, you but for Lily's mother btw.

I liked most of the ones you like, although I'm not a fan of Hermione's taste in names. At least she didn't name them after odd people in Hogwarts, A History.

i like rose (very pretty, especially with ron calling her rosie) and hugo, but they are a bit random. i'm still rooting for george having kids and naming his son fred :)

i feel kind of bad for albus severus getting a double wammy on names ending in "us", but we don't know what lily and james' middle names are.

as much as i like victoire, i do like victoria better. and ariana was a little too normal sounding with two brothers named albus and aberforth. (and i'm not sure if i'm an entirely big fan of sib sets with all the same name...) i really like the name helena. scorpius didn't really bug me, but i really would like to know a) who the mom is, and b) if there are siblings and names

Though it wasn't a new name in DH, I'm still completely in love with the name Bellatrix. I also really like Lily, Rose, James, and Teddy, and Scorpius makes me giggle (nearly all Black family members have constellation names - Bellatrix, Andromeda, Sirius, etc.). Hugo is horrible, and Fred definitely would have been better, but I thought that maybe the Weasley children decided to let George name his first son Fred.

Ariana is also pretty, but I agree that it seems odd next to Albus and Aberforth. Actually, the name Ariana and her entire backstory felt incredibly fanfiction-y to me. As did the entire epilogue. Ugh.

I love the name Bellatrix too.

And though it wasn't new in DH either...I just realized that Mundungus might be the worst name out of the entire series, possibly. xD

*Is still bitter about Fred*

Al is one of my lease favourite names! I was pissed there was no children after Remus or Sirius! Everything I think of Kendra I think of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes book Shattered Mirrors of the Vampyres of Kendra line.

I like Hugo actually and James is the middle name of my youngest son (Kaelin James).

I actually do like a LOT of HP names.

The ending of that book was so shitty.. ugh.

I ditto your thoughts re Fred and Hugo.
Why not Fred!?!
And Ginny clearly had no say in their kids either lol.

Poor Fred :(

I love most of the names -- Scorpius and Albus Severus excluded. I especially love Lily and James, not for the significance but just the actual names.

I'm actually kind of upset that so many people disliked the epilogue, seemingly for what are the wrong reasons. Rowling stated that she wrote the epilogue well before she finished the seventh book -- maybe even some of the later books -- and that she deliberately wrote it vaguely, without crowbarring a lot of character information into it. Most of all, she said she deliberately made it happy because Harry had suffered so much over the last couple of years -- he deserved a happy and mundane life!

Ooh yay, HP names!! :D

Helena is very pretty. (So is Rowena.)
Albus Severus...well what can I say, I started BAWLING when I heard what Harry had to say about Snape and it touched me deeply that he would name his son for him! So although it might not have the best flow in the world, it's okay...I don't think it's that bad actually. And the meaning behind it is just so beautiful. *tear*

James and Lily are just, EH, okay in my opinion.

Hugo & Rose are both nice enough names...but I too was wondering where in the heck Ron & Hermione came up with them, and why they didn't honor any dead people (especially Fred). :(

Scorpius, although I like most of the Malfoy names, I have to admit struck me as a bit weird. What'll his nickname be, Scorp? Scorpie? Well. It's kinda cool in an out-there sort of way. :D

Victoire is pretty. I like French names. Vick-twar. Nice sound.
Ted/Teddy is cute..obviously they would name him for Tonks' dad.
Ariana and Kendra are both pretty nice, though I like Ariana a lot more.

I really do like a LOT of HP names though. All of the following (starring the ones I think are super-beautiful or good or whatever):
Arabella, Bellatrix*, Demelza, Lucius, Luna, Minerva, Narcissa*, Petunia (heh heh it's kinda cute), Rita*, Seamus, Severus, Sybill*.
And others.
Oh but the strangest one might be Xenophilius; imagine having that name? ^~

Oh, I forgot: Ginevra and Hermione are both great names too.
