what are your thoughts on naming themes? I hate alliteration, whether its naming your kids kevin katherine and kelly, or if its joseph jenkins or sidney sebold, however, i love other naming themes, for instance naming your kids after your favourite authors, or book characters, biblical names, or musicians. opinions?

Also, I've listed some of my other name-theme lists before (Harry Potter, Rockstars, Fitzgeralds Characters), so heres my latest:
Francesca Lia Block Characters Names

I don't know how many of you have heard of FLB, but she write beautiful, ethereal novels, and uses some interesting names (often word names), some I love, some I don't like, and some I like but wouldn't actually use, so here's a short list of all of the above.

Boys

Lex
West
Smoke
Raphael
Valentine
Rafe
Paul
Dionisio
Dirk
Duck
Jack
Griffin

Girls

Marina
Ruby
Echo
Eden
Lillian
Cherokee
Snow
Barbie
Vixanne
Fifi
Primavera
Weetzie
Tuck
Winnie
Laurel
Claudia
Sylvie
Beauty

realistically, i'd probably only use Lex, West, Marina, Griffin, Ruby, Lillian, Winnie, Laurel, Jack, Sylvie, or Eden, but i really like some of the others too.

My sister and I (11 years apart, no one in between) are Sarah Lesley and Shannan Leigh. My mother says they didn't realize it when they picked my name, but didn't mind/care, so they just went with it.

I have a friend who is the oldest of 8 - all Biblical names:

Sarah
Benjamin
Rebekah
Joseph
Abigail
Lydia
Caleb
Joshua

I have another friend, the second oldest of 8 - with all the kids having 4 letters in their names.

i feel stupid for not knowing Lydia is in the bible! ha. i also knew a woman who picked all biblical names: Daniel, Sarah, Elizabeth, Joshua.

i'm actually very anti-themes, so much so that i wouldn't even pick two names for my kids if they ended in the same sound ["Kelly" and "Bailey" for example]

I haven't read anything by her in a long time, but I was a FLB junkie in high school.

Oh and to answer your question. I hate themed names. I just find it silly.

I think kids should be named for themselves, not as part of a set.

That said, if you like the names anyway and it's not too obviously themed, there's no harm in it. The top three or so name on my current girls list all happen to be queens or rulers. Didn't mean it that way, and most won't notice a theme if I wind up with three girls named Catherine, Elizabeth, and Victoria someday, but it's a theme all the same.

My husband is into three-letter names because all three of us - him, his son and me - have three-letter names (Rob, Max and Mia). That's all pure coincidence, of course. Other than Ava or Eva, I can't think of another three-letter name I really like. I'd rather use a name that fits my child than try to cram him or her into a theme.

My boyf's an alliteration but only because his parents changed his original last name (mother's 2nd married name) to his father's name.

I personally adore Biblical names for boys and old fashioned names and honor names for girls.

FLB names I adore:

(B)
West
Jack

(G)
Marina
Ruby

I thought it cheesy for a while but now his name just seems.. so like him? If that makes sense. I can't see him as anything else and I love him, so it just works.
