Jul. 7th, 2007 09:13 amAt a bachelorette party last night, we were offering suggestions to the bride (who is pregnant) on baby names, and someone jokingly said that she should name her baby after a god/goddess. She ended up liking the idea! So we're looking for names.
She likes Celtic, Norse, and Greek names... but she doesn't want a name that is too "out there" and she doesn't want a name that means something terrible. She really liked the name Eris, but then found out that she was the goddess of discord and rivalry, and definitely did not want that as a name. Any suggestions?
ETA: She is also open to the idea of any characters within mythology. She likes the name Rota, who is a valkyrie in Norse mythology. So any suggestions in that area would be great too.

Tell your friend to check these with a CREDIBLE source before using it and saying, "my son is named Dylan after the Celtic gaurdian deity of the mouth of the River Conway!" and finding out that the god was actually the god of sex or something ridiculous like that. But I got the Celtic ones HERE (http://www.scns.com/earthen/other/seanachaidh/godcelt.html), the Greek ones HERE (http://www.crystalinks.com/greekgods.html) and the Norse ones HERE (http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/norse-mythology.php?_gods-list).

Date: 2007-07-07 08:47 pm (UTC)In Celtic there always was Rhiannon, goddess of the underworld, horses and fertility that I liked. Aine was a favorite of mine as well but I'm not sure I would ever name my daughter it.
And I don't know about anyone else but I always loved the name Kefa, who was from Egyptian mythology and she was the one who gave bith to time. Isis is another pretty name from the Egyptian mythology.

If she wanted to go for the really weird, there's always Sinfjotli, Hrafnkel and Skarphedin!
