[identity profile] audiciousamazon.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
At a bachelorette party last night, we were offering suggestions to the bride (who is pregnant) on baby names, and someone jokingly said that she should name her baby after a god/goddess. She ended up liking the idea! So we're looking for names.

She likes Celtic, Norse, and Greek names... but she doesn't want a name that is too "out there" and she doesn't want a name that means something terrible. She really liked the name Eris, but then found out that she was the goddess of discord and rivalry, and definitely did not want that as a name. Any suggestions?

ETA: She is also open to the idea of any characters within mythology. She likes the name Rota, who is a valkyrie in Norse mythology. So any suggestions in that area would be great too.

I know a guy named Thorin (after the Norse god Thor), but I'm not a huge fan. It's not horrible, though.

GIRLS
*Freya - Norse - goddess of love & beauty
Eisa - Norse - daughter of Loki & Glut
Morrigan - Celtic - mother goddess
Brigit - Celtic - goddess in of poetry, healing, smithcraft and martial arts
*Aoife - Celtic - goddess of protection, general knowledge, teaching
*Corra - Celtic - goddess of divination & prophecy
*Thalia - Greek - one of the graces, who were the goddesses of charm, beauty, nature, & fertility; also muse of comedy
*Calliope - Greek - muse of epic poetry

BOYS
*Dylan - Celtic - guardian deity of the mouth of the River Conway
Slaine - Celtic - god of healing & medical arts
(I had trouble finding good boys' names)

Tell your friend to check these with a CREDIBLE source before using it and saying, "my son is named Dylan after the Celtic gaurdian deity of the mouth of the River Conway!" and finding out that the god was actually the god of sex or something ridiculous like that. But I got the Celtic ones HERE (http://www.scns.com/earthen/other/seanachaidh/godcelt.html), the Greek ones HERE (http://www.crystalinks.com/greekgods.html) and the Norse ones HERE (http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/norse-mythology.php?_gods-list).

How would she like the name Hera? I don't consider that out there at all but some may who knows. I also liked Juno, her Roman name. There is also Lucina, who is named the goddess of Childbirth I beleive in Roman mythology. Then as well I liked Minerva, Ceres, Fauna, Flora, Hebe, Metis, Persephone, Rhea, and Vesta and also Leda.

In Celtic there always was Rhiannon, goddess of the underworld, horses and fertility that I liked. Aine was a favorite of mine as well but I'm not sure I would ever name my daughter it.

And I don't know about anyone else but I always loved the name Kefa, who was from Egyptian mythology and she was the one who gave bith to time. Isis is another pretty name from the Egyptian mythology.

Oooh, I took a Norse myths class a year ago, and while I'm not personally a fan of using the names on my own children, I do know some. I'll just write down some of the names of gods whose characters I liked or found interesting. I'll also add in some names that were in some of the more popular, well-known family sagas. There are so many various spellings for a lot of these names, too. Oh, and with Norse names, the "d" is pronounced as a "th" sound. So not ODE-in, but OATH-in, GOOTH-rin (Gudrun), BALTH-er (Baldr), etc. The "j" is pronounced as an "i", with an "ee" sound - Njal as NEE-al, Sinfjotli as Sin-FEE-ot-lee, etc.

Girls:
Freya - goddess of fertility
Frigg - goddess of marriage and motherhood
Sif - Thor's wife
Sol - goddess of the sun
Brynhild (or Brynhildr) - a valkyrie in Volsunga saga
Gudrun - a princess in Volsunga saga
Signy (or Signe) - daughter of king Volsung, sister of Sigmund the hero in Volsunga saga
Bergthora - Njal's wife in Njala saga

Boys:
Baldr (or Balder) - son of Odin, thought to be the best of the gods
Bragi - god of poetry
Freyr - god of fertility, Freya's brother
Heimdall - guardian of Asgard, where the gods lived
Kvasir - god of inspiration, created from the blood of all the other gods
Tyr - god of war, justice
Gunnar - a treacherous prince in Volsunga saga, or one of the main characters in Njala saga (Njal's best friend)
Sigurd - the son of Sigmund, the dragon slayer in Volsunga saga, a main hero in Norse mythology
Njal (or Njall) - one of the main characters in Njala saga where he was the most wise
Kari (prounounced COW-ree) - takes vengeance for the Njalssons in Njala saga
Bjorn - means bear, common name

There's also tons of names with Thor as a prefix: Thorgeir, Thorbjorn, Thorkell, etc. You can always search "Norse gods" on Wikipedia, and there'll be a list, or "Norse sagas" and you can go through the pages of sagas, looking for names there too. If she wanted to go for the really weird, there's always Sinfjotli, Hrafnkel and Skarphedin!
