I think the previously mentioned actress's name is actually Salma Hayek, although I might be wrong. Myself being from Alabama, that colors my perception, but when I see Selma, I first think of Selma, Alabama, and the Civil Rights Movement marches between there and Montgomery.
my sister had a gradeschool friend with that name. but she was Muslim and so I always figured it was a more ethnic name that would sound funny on a white person. at least to me.
Selma/Salma is really popular Arabic name, not just for Muslims. Arabs can be of any (or no) religion. They can also be blonde and blue-eyed or light-skinned. The name is used by everyone!
it makes me think of salmonella, because i always say it selma-nella (not sure if thats the right pronunciation. Now that I'm in college a lot of things I thought were right are being revealed as wrong)

Date: 2007-06-20 04:38 am (UTC)This is who I think of when I hear the name. So I don't like it much. But that aside, I think it's a nice-sounding name.

Date: 2007-06-20 04:40 am (UTC)It's a good name. Not my favorite, and not my style, but, you know, not a bad name.
