what do you guys think of naming a girl Ebony..
I know it's usually thought of as an African American, and it means "dark wood" or "dark beauty". I think its a pretty name but I'm not sure of how it might be looked at..

I can't really imagine it on a girl who isn't African-American just because of the meaning. It's not really my style, either. I would definitely be thrown for a minute to see it on a white kid or something.

I once knew a child called Ebony - she was pale with blonde hair and it suited her fine. It never occurred to me that it was supposed to be a dark name.

I know two girls called Ebony, one a girl i work with who is pale with dark hair.
And another, a girl many years younger than me who was my primary school 'buddy', she has red hair!
It suited them both perfectly.
I don't see why you shouldn't name any child that. It's a nice name.
In fact naming a dark girl Ebony might be seen as a bit of a cliche..

well I'm feeling a lot better about the name now, plus I talked with some friends tonight. I think me and my boyfriend really like the name Ebony Jade.

Mmm when I hear it I immediately think Ebony/Ivory, so I think it's pretty silly on a white girl. Maybe if she at least had dark features. I'm a little fixated with name meanings, though.

I was thinking Jade. But its really the only thing that fits so far out of the girl names that we have that we like.

I've met a very fair skinned little blonde girl called Ebony before. We don't really have as much expectation that certain names belong to certain races here in Australia, at least not to the extent that it seems to be in the USA. Still, everyone knows what ebony means and people may have found it strange on her.

I'd like Ebony on a white girl, but it would make more sense to me if she had dark hair and dark eyes and an overall allure of "darkness", like an elf from the woods or something.

As a counterpart, I'd like Ivory on someone with perlescent complexion, maybe red hair and that air of thinness and royalt.

I knew a girl named Ebony Gay, so Ebony Jade does seem to roll off the tongue to me. However, my initial thought was to wonder what shade ebony jade would be, exactly.

I used to have a black regular at my old job named Blondelle. I thought it was a little odd, but no one else seemed to notice, for what it's worth. But then maybe it was because she wore a GIANT BLONDE WIG all the time...Okay, bad example.
