My cousin (Brett) and his wife (Ryan) just had a little girl, who they named Gabbi (I dont know the middle name). It's just Gabbi, not Gabrielle or anything like that. Now, I know some of you are all "why give the kid a name if you're just going to call them by a nick name" but I like having a formal name and a nickname, and really wish they had gone with Gabrielle/Gabriella or something like that. WDYT?

Also, my mom says that Gabrielle is geting to be trendy? I don't have a lot of contact with younger children so I can't say...

I agree with them. I've never understood the whole nick name thing. Why would you name your child something you're not going to use anway? You'll basically just end up with a name on paper that isn't 'you.'

I really like the idea of having a formal, "professional" name, and then a nickname to go by with family and friends. My name isn't really nicknamable, and I always envied the Kims, Jessies, Chrissys, etc who got to have a really pretty name, and then something to shorten it to so it wasn't such a mouthful. That and it's more than one thing to call your child, for varity.

I agree with you. I'd like to give the kid at least some option as to whether they want a nicknamey name or not.

I did that with my son. I hated his long name "Colson", but my husband adored it.

We couldn't agree. He calls him "Colson", I call him "Cole".

Some people think "Cole" is a child's name, so why would I want to stick my baby with something associated to young generations?

Cole was my mom's first choice name for my brother. but she quickly vetoed it because our last name begins with Kole, and it's pronounced the same way. Cole Kole--- is just too much!

An ex-coworker named her kids Abbi & Ali. Not short for anything, she just named her kdis that. Who knows.

Gabrielle is really popular right now. I don't like Gabbi as a full name at all and I don't think the child will when she is a grown woman! Gabrielle sounds much more sophisticated and mature. Gabbi is so childish sounding!
