wdyt

What do yall think of the name Harlow? Is it a firt name, surname, place name? I like it as a first name for a girl. It's on my top ten list.

I think of Jean Harlow.

I've seen Harley on a girl, so I don't see Harlow as a far reach. On a boy, it would remind me too much of Arlo. Ugh.

because of the word harlot? I have the same association ;)

It's been on my list for years, and for a girl. I like it as a middle name.

I think they're too similar personally. The endings sound weird together.

Makes me think of a 'harlot', or a place in Essex. I really don't like it, it sounds ugly.

Yeah, it reminds me of Harlot too...sorry. :\

I also think harlot. And isn't Jean Harlow kind of a sex symbol? I just can't make that work out very well on an infant or toddler.

With that logic, though, we wouldn't have anyone named Betty, Marilyn, Angelina, Cindy, Claudia, Tyra, Cheryl, Farrah, Linda, Giselle, etc...

I like Harlow for a girl. My first thought was of Jean, not a whore. Now, kids can be mean little buggers, but most of the kids I know don't know the word harlot, let alone what it means (for which I blame the lack of reading among teens...but thats another post:)

I just think that the primary, and often only, association people have with the name Harlow is of this old-time sex-symbol pin-up woman.

The other names you suggest have a variety of other associations, and not purely a connection with one attractive model/actress.

And I don't mean to suggest that this is a big reason not to use the name, but I think it might be somewhat jarring to meet a young child named Harlow.

I was just going to say that. Harlot.

seconded about it being too cloce to harlot

Harlow is a town in Essex, England. It was one of the 1960's 'new towns'.

that's what i think of, too. my university offers some classics courses as like an exchange program thing in harlow.

[identity profile] monalyssasmile.livejournal.com 2007-06-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of Joely Fisher's daughter True Harlow.

Yuck. It's somehow sleazy AND pretentious to me at the same time. Wasn't sure that was possible :P

Call me stupid, but I think Hawley would be a good name for a girl.

[identity profile] vase-of-acid.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I know a pretentious boy whose last name is Hawley, as well as a street in Milwaukee, WI.

[identity profile] trtlstars.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hawley is a town in NE Pennsylvania...

Harlow or Harlot- LOVE IT!

[identity profile] neverstarsburn.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
harlot means prostitute.
i mean, my name is derived from dionysus, the god of getting drunk and partying, but its much less obviously so. naming a kid harlot is the same as naming them whore.
