Working on my data entry job, I came across "Ron Hetwig." It immediately made me think of Harry Potter. Are there any other names that you immediately associate with fiction instead of actual people?
Also what do y'all think of naming children after their parents? Personally I'm against it. My mom and my sister had pretty much the same name, and it was always confusing when people called the house. I'm thinking especially of this because my boyfriend, Casey, wants to name his daughter after him. I have nothing against the name, I just don't want two people with the same name living in the same house. What do you guys think?
(PS this is the same guy who wants to name his first-born son Avalanche)

Date: 2007-06-04 03:49 pm (UTC)Personally, I don't like it either, kids named after their parents...for the same reason as you. I once heard of a girl who was called Annemarie (common Dutch name) and it was also after her parents, but the letters were mixed together and put in a different order. I quite liked that idea (but it only works when you can really make something normal out of it =P). And I must say Casey is a pretty sweet name =).
As for Avalanche...hm...I don't know. It sounds more girly to me. What do you think about it yourself? Personally, if he really wanted it, I'd make it a middle name, I guess.

Date: 2007-06-04 07:13 pm (UTC)Example: I babysit for a kid named William David, just like his dad. The father goes by Bill, and the son goes by David, no confusion but the tradition and the tribute is still there

Date: 2007-06-05 12:55 pm (UTC)Anyway I really don't understand people naming children after themselves. I can see why you'd name them after your parents or grandparents etc... if you love that person and want to honour/remember them that way. But why yourself? Seems quite arrogant and egotistical to me. Although it's a common thing to do, I just don't really get it.

Date: 2007-06-04 09:20 pm (UTC)Another friend had a boy, and named him Matthew Chance. The dad is Matthew. They don't want 2 Matthew's so they call the little boy Chance. Poor little guy will have to explain to all of his teachers that yes my named is Matthew, but call me Chance. Why oh why didn't they just name him Chance Matthew is beyond me.
Hairdresser named her daughter Mckenna. Dad is Ken. They are now getting a divorce because he had an affair. She is seriously looking into legally changing the little girl's name because she hate's Ken and can't stand to call the daughter Mckenna. The middle name is the soon to be x-mil's name so that doesn't work either. The little girl is 4 and is so confused because when she goes to the Dad's house she is Mckenna and at the Mom's house she's Sophie. Obviously the Mom went way overboard and she should have been mature and learned to seperate the daughter from the Dad.

Caller: Hello, is Cathrine ______ here?
Family: There's two Cathrine ______ here, you'll have to be more specific.
Caller: Cathrine S. ______.
Family: I'm sorry, they're both Cathrine S. _______.
Caller: Well, uh.
It became even more complicated when they both attended the same university.

Date: 2007-06-05 07:33 pm (UTC)"May I speak with Mr. L_____?" (and it's a fairly uncommon name)
We have three. Which would you like?
"Um... J. L_____?"
None of them are J. Oh, do you mean Mrs. L_____?"
"No, I mean... OH! L_____ is the FIRST name of the person I'm looking for!"
Because, yes, two of the company's employees have the same name, but with the first and last names swapped for each other.
It's GREAT! A highly effective way to immediately determine whether it's a spam phone caller who doesn't actually know any of the people who work there.
