May. 20th, 2007 10:18 pmWe are at eat other's throats trying to agree upon a name for our baby boy due in September. (We had absolutely no problem agreeing on a girl's name and then found out we were having a boy - darn.) We've each gone through several books and websites and come up with separate lists of names for each of us to draw from. Nothing substantial has come from that. I have a name that I love that he totally hates (Harrison). He has a name he's really fond of (Hayden) but it's too trendy and gender neutral for me. Today, he pored over 8000 boys names and came up with a list of about 80. From that, I've nixed over half of them. Here are my favorites from his list.
Aidan (little fire) - love the name, but I'm way too afraid my kid will be one of 10 Aidan's in his class
Alden (old friend, wise protector)
Ansel (blessed, angel)
Eben (stone of help)
Emory/Emery (bravery & power, ruler of work)
Harris (home ruler) - I think he added this one as a consolation prize since he hates Harrison.
Holden (deep valley or kindly, gracious)
Keirnan (little dark one)
Nolan (chariot fighter, champion, famous and noble)
Teagan (little poet or attractive)
Tenneyson (son of Dennis) - Not that my husband's name is Dennis, but I like it anyway. Would need a nickname though, since it's long, and we can't think of any.
Wyndham (winda's water meadow) - Although, I much prefer Wynden over Wyndham. Either way, we like that the kid's nickname could be Wyn.
Okay, things to note...our last name is Close, and my husband's not too fond of alliteration or assonance. Plus, 3 out of 4 of the babies born in our group of friends all have names that start with a hard C/K sound, so we are trying to avoid that.
Please...offer as many suggestions as possible...

Date: 2007-05-21 03:49 am (UTC)I really like Keirnan, Emery, and Ansel. But since you said you don't want a hard K sound... Nolan is cute too! Ansel is my favourite of them all.

Date: 2007-05-21 03:56 am (UTC)Alden- eh, i think it could be done. nickname? al? i don't like al. but alden is cute. i knew a baby alder.
Ansel- i like this.
Eben- hmm...i think i like it.
Emory/Emery- i've met a girl emery. i don't like her. my name is emmy, so its close. i dont know about this one. it seems feminine.
Harris- i dont necessarily like it. it seems that maybe this can be a comprimise to you both, though, and that may be a good thing.
Holden- i like the name, but i once read a book where a very evil man was named holden. it gives me the shivers. my uncles name is holde, and i like that.
Keirnan- i REALLY like this one.
Nolan- hmm. if paired with a strong middle name, this could be great.
Teagan- love it.
Tenneyson- this is the one that i really cannot imagine. its a stretch.
Wyndham- eh, i'm not sure.
it's funny how so many of these made me think of so many people i know! they are all so unique...or not heard often.

Date: 2007-05-21 04:08 am (UTC)I like Ansel a lot. I like a lot of those names, actually.
I only know a girl named Teagan, however.
For Tennyson you could use "Ten"? It's simple and, though it's also a number, it makes perfect sense from the name, which I think would be the point. I would also spell it without the extra "e", since that's the way the famous poet spelled it, and thus the way most people would think to spell it.

Date: 2007-05-21 04:37 am (UTC)Also, any reason why Tenneyson and not Tennyson? He might run into trouble with the spelling later in life.
Some suggestions (I tried to throw in some not-so-trendy Irish ones, if that's your thing):
Alexander Close
Donovan Close
Evan Close
Lachlan Close
Owen Close
Seamus Close
Adam Close
Alaric Close
Hadrian Close
Good luck!

Date: 2007-05-21 04:44 am (UTC)Definitely avoid Aidan. You'll see them EVERYWHERE. That's the only one from this list I'd give a thumbs down. Tenneyson kind of looks like the poet's name, misspelled though.

Date: 2007-05-21 07:10 am (UTC)Aidan really isn't all that common. I work at a place where there there are kids there CONSTANTLY, and I probably have seen ONE Aidan my entire time working there (over a year). I see more Jayden/Cayden.
Maybe it's just my area, because Aidan? Really not around much here. Central Cali. If you really like Aidan, keep an ear out when you're in a place where there are lots of kids.
I like Harris, like Harrison better. Love Emery and Holden, too.

Emery (how about Emerson?)
Kiernan (but Kieran or Kinan better)
Nolan (my favorite here!)
I like Teagan but it's gonna be overused for the next 5 years.
Extra names I suggest
Ezra
Aaron
Ryan
Joshua
Taylor
Keep us updated with your choice! :D

Date: 2007-05-21 11:22 am (UTC)Kieran, Aimon (sp?), Harry? Emnlyn (As in UK sports personality Emlyn Hughes), Adrian?
I know the male name Harrison from 'Tru Calling', starring Eliza Dushku from Buffy. He was very cute :-)
In the UK housing estate streets are often named after dead poets. Tennyson CLose would sound too much like that over here. Wyndham/Wymondham are also the names of English towns/villages. I associate the name Holden with an English an actress and an actor as a surname.

Date: 2007-05-21 01:15 pm (UTC)Not that either of those things are crucially weighted, just stuff to consider.
I'd steer clear of Aidan for the über-trendy factor, and clear of Teagan simply because I went to school with TWO very girly girls that had the name.
Tenneyson ONLY if spelled Tennyson, in my opinion. It's not common enough to really need "uniquificating" (i.e. made harder to spell), and it's lovely the way the poet spelled it.

Date: 2007-05-21 03:53 pm (UTC)Alden (old friend, wise protector) - also a fan
Ansel (blessed, angel) - Nahh, same name as the weird photographer and to me it sounds like a girl (plus too many s's)
Eben (stone of help) - Ohh! I like!
Emory/Emery (bravery & power, ruler of work) - Quite unique, gender neutral, I do like, but I think it might go better on a girl?
Harris (home ruler) - Nahh, doesn't go well with your last name
Holden (deep valley or kindly, gracious) - Lovely, manly name, but too much associations with Catcher in the Rye. Also, "Holden Close" does sound kind of sweet: Hold Him Close.
Keirnan (little dark one) - I also like! But the alliteration doesn't work.
Nolan (chariot fighter, champion, famous and noble) - This one does go well with your last name
Teagan (little poet or attractive) - I think this is a girl's name
Tenneyson (son of Dennis) - Tenney Close? Sonny Close? Nee Close? This one sounds kind of posh.
Wyndham (winda's water meadow) - This sounds like a name used for a literary character. Pretty.

Date: 2007-05-21 08:54 pm (UTC)Aidan (little fire) - I also don't mind this name, though the first youngster I knew with the name was a girl (weird), but now it is way too trendy.
Alden (old friend, wise protector) - I really like this one a lot.
Ansel (blessed, angel) - I like, but not my fave
Eben (stone of help) - yuck. This sounds weird.
Emory/Emery (bravery & power, ruler of work) - LOVE it. I prefer Emery.
Harris (home ruler) - I like Harrison better, but this is ok.
Holden (deep valley or kindly, gracious) - I didn't like the character, and I don't like the name.
Keirnan (little dark one) - Too weird. Doesn't sound good with Close.
Nolan (chariot fighter, champion, famous and noble) - I like it well enough.
Teagan (little poet or attractive) - ick. I only know girls with this name.
Tenneyson (son of Dennis) - Ten would be a good nn. I like this. Are you into the author?
Wyndham (winda's water meadow) - My grandma Winnie went by Wynn in high school. I think this name sounds really pretentious and old.
