[identity profile] sweatydog.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

As I said in my last post, I grew up with an extremely common name with at least 5 other girls with the same name in my grade.Starting around the age of five or six I started coming up with names I wanted to change mine to;

Five years old;

Samantha ( I can't remember where this came from)
Nancy (yes Nancy drew)
Deva (like devil)

Thirteen years old;

Wendell
Eddward

at thirteen I also wanted to have twin boys and name them;

Joel Darren
Jose Warren

Current favorites;
Julian Davis
Penelope Rose.

What names did you like when you were a kid?

When I was about 5, I wanted to change my name to Jasmine because of the movie Aladdin. When I was 14, I wanted to change it to Tallulah (like in the book Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood). And then when I was 15, I used to use the name Jules in my online diary because I was paranoid about people finding out who I was.

My current favorites are Eliza Adrienne and Julia Margaret for girls and Samuel Michael and Benjamin Atticus for boys.

As you can tell, my taste in names has changed quite a bit since I was 5 ;).

I knew an Andrea (pronounced On-dray-uh) who was so excited that I knew how to pronounce her name.

As a little kid ...
Boys = Percy, Thomas, Timothy
Girls = Annabel, Lauren, Samantha
My favourite doll's name changed a million times, but for the longest time she was Jessica Paris. Her 'siblings' were Louis & Coralie.

Then when I was 14-ish ...
Boys = Felix, Robin, Sterling
Girls = Ruby, Vada, Stevie
At that age I'd decided I was going to be famous, so had to use weird names because that's what celebs did.

My namelist from age 16-ish was hardcore hippy, with a bit of obscure mythological thrown in. I was into the whole two middle name thing too. So a bit embarassing really, lol.

Top 3 today ...
Boys = August, Finn*, Lennon
Girls = Esme, Gaia, Meredith
(*probably as a nn for Finnegan or Finlay, haven't decided)

Anyway I still love Ruby, but the popularity bugs me. Thomas & Coralie are sweet too. There are some hippyish names on my current list, but I've toned it down and would pair them with mainstream mns.

I love Finnegan. Esme and Meredith are high on my list.

My mum told me she nearly called me Guinevere, so I wanted to be called that when I was little.

When I was really little I loved the name Sharla, I don't know how I came up with it, but I would use it whenever I played and I gave the name to one of my hamsters.

Elementary school: Maura, Moira, Arianna, Audrianna, Love, Daffodil (Daffy) lol, Theodore, Brennan, Warren, Bradley, Lawrence

Middle school: Calista, Isobel(a), Ginger, Athena, Madeline, Roxanne, Logan, Adam, Bailey (for a boy), Tyler

High school: Eleanor, Catherine, Sylvia, Audrey, Athena, Rosalie, Beau, Clark, Logan, Owen, Jude

Currently: Athena, Helena, Lulu, June, Faye, Clark, Jonas, Lyle, Harper

I've been making lists of names for a long time, it's always funny to go back and see some of the stuff I had on there.

I've never liked my name (Stephanie), but I've never been able to think of one to suit me better.

When I was little, though, my favorite doll was a Cabbage Patch Kid whose certificate identified her as Carrie or something. I named her Victoria, and I still love that name.

My name is Brittany and when I was really little [5ish?] I always wanted everyone to call me Mickey! [as in Mickey Mouse] haha.
I was a very big tomboy, so as I got older, I wanted my name to be Branden.

I should probably note that I grew out of those stages and am now very much a girl and I love my name, even though it's so common.

I used to read those books just because they have the same family name as I do. I was really into them.
My aunt is a substitute teacher and once had a 6th grade girl come up and ask her if she was related to Jessica and Elizabeth. I feel like that's a little old not to understand what "fiction" is.

When I was about three, I insisted that everyone in my family called me Lu Lu. Unfortunately, it stuck, but has been shortened to Lu.
I also named my imaginary friend Sitate (Sit-ah-tea).
I think that sums up my childhood taste in names very well.
Now, I love Evelyn Charlotte and Noah William.

When I was a little girl my favorite name was Amy. I named all my baby dolls Amy Lynn, Amy Marie, Amy Lee, Amy Elizabeth, I actually used to complain to my parents and ask them why they didn't name me Amy.
My middle name is Rae, and I used to hate that, too. When I got older I started to like the name Rae, so then I started to think that if I had a daughter her name would be Amy Rae.

I still like the name Amy, but probably would not use it today. It was my top name for girls until I became an adult.

I also briefly took a liking to Adrianna because I was in a cemetary and I saw a baby's headstone with this on it.

I did consider Victoria Amy Briefly, but I like Victoria Jade much better.

Reminds me of my sister. She loved the name Rose when she was little, and named all of her stuffed animals and such that. :p

I used to like Charlotte after I read Charlotte's web when I was 7. Then I decided, why not make it even frillier? I combined it with Priscilla, and came up with the name Shacilla (can't remember how I spelled it).

So glad that I don't have that taste in names anymore! It's like the ruffled pink lacy skirt of names.

I hated my name when I was litte... Jessica was waaaay too popular! I wanted to be called Kirsten (like my best friend) or Jacinta.

As for names I liked:
Primary School: Brooke, Tiffany, Brittany, Zoey, Tom, Caspar
High School: Zachary, Isaac (I was a Hanson fan!), Joshua, Pacey (also a Dawson's creek fan), Hunter, Taejohn, Parker, Lily, Grace,
Now: Kenny, Asher, Lucas, Ruben, Hamish, Evan, Isabella, Ruby, Alexis/Alexa, Milliana, Georgia

When I was really little I liked Victoria, Courtney and Nicole for girls. For boys I liked Seth and Slade.

I became a name nerd when I was around 12-13, so at that time my favorite names were Madeleine and Christian. But I also liked Kennedy & McKenna (though I knew they were bad and didn't ever plan on naming actual children these names).

I've always wanted to be named something other than Esther ever since kindergarten. Back then, that was my English name--you know, two names, two cultures, that kind of thing--and it was EXTREMELY popular. I hated it, I hated being called Easter, and I just wanted to change it. My mum hated it too so she changed it to my Korean name ;) I like it wayyyy better than Esther.

I've always wanted to be named Spica, though. Odd, because it's a star in the constellation of Virgo, not Gemini [and that's what I am. ;)] Plus, I'm called that a LOT---it's my online pseudonym and it stuck in rl. Unless you were in my Spanish class, in which case I was Luna. I loved that name too. 8D

Kimberly - I was a huge Power Rangers fan
Katherine - again, Power Rangers, but I also liked it in general for a long time
Stephanie - Full House was one of the foundations of my childhood
Josephine - I had a Little Women phase when I was 9 or 10
April, May, June - my friends and I used to pretend we were sisters w/ these names

Billy - Power Rangers yet again. I don't remember it being a particularly favorite name (actually, I don't remember having any favorite boy names as a kid), but I did use it for my imaginary cousin. (Yes, cousin - I was an only child, & all my real cousins lived far away, so I did strange things like make up imaginary relatives instead of imaginary friends.)

I despise my birth name and always have. It's changed now, but when I was small I wanted to be Rosemary, after discovering Blyton I went through a phase of wanting to be Jock (glad my parents didn't let me change it to that), and went through Lydia and Jasmine and the like before deciding I liked Maggie.

When I was a little, about six or so, I said to my mom, "When I grow up, I'm changing my name to Starlite." Like the horse in Rainbow Brite. I was a pretty sweet little kid, I should probably change my name to Starlite, d'ya think?
