I had a friend named Bryan, and one day someone teased him and said that it looked like a girls name. (I didn't agree, but oh well.) He said that when he was born, his dad wanted to name him Byron and his mom wanted to name him Brian. When dad left the room, mom wrote Bryan on the birth certificate, thinking it was a compromise. Mom and dad got divorced over it. The End.
I guess names are just as important to the namer as the named.

They got divorced because of that? Wow, I would think that would sort of be a compromise. They couldn't agree in the first place...

Wow, I actually like Bryan better than Brian. I think it's nice that it's a little different. (And I like it better than Byron too).

If my husband named ou rkid something he knew I hated without discussing it with me, I'd consider divorce. He obviously doesn't respect me or my opinions, so that probably wouldnt have been the first or last time he'd totally ignore my feelings.
And if it didn't end in divorce, it'd end in the kid getting a different name. No one should name a kid a name they *know the other parents hates. And he obviously hate Brian/Bryan quite a bit. It was a sheisty move on mom's part though.
However, I much prefer Bryan over Byron. I have a brother named Byron, and he hates it too. LOL

Hmm, my grandad did this to my grandma with BOTH of their kids...they didn't get divorced over it though, despite there being some big changes.
My dad went from being Christopher John to Michael Anthony, and my aunt turned from a Helen into a Patricia.

I'm still not sure why my Grandma trusted him to go and get my aunt registered after what he did the first time!

I have a friend with a similar story--his father had named his older brother, the parents agreed that it was the mother's turn, and when she was recovering from the birth, the father went ahead and used the name he wanted on the birth certificate. They got divorced, my friend eventually legally changed his name.

Crazy...

I guess everyone has a name story...I have two older brothers that my mom named, so when I arrived (a girl) my dad said he should get to name me, therefore instead of Brookelynn (because both my brothers, my mom, and dad's name all started with a B,) I am now Amber...and they did get divorced too...but not over that lol.

I don't think Bryan looks like a girls name, I know more people who spell it Bryan than I do Brian.
