combining names?

babynamesA friend of mine suggested combining parts of the names of the parents or of people the parents admire (grandparents, aunts, friends, etc.) to form a new name for a child.
Ex...
Elizabeth and Jonathan
Most obvious blending would give you Ethan. E from Elizabeth and -than from Jonathan.
But you could also get JoBeth, Izana, Litha, Jobe, Zana, Onli, etc.
What do you think of this? I'm not sure of my opinion. It could help with finding unique and interesting names.
PS If I combined the names of myself and my significant other the best name I could get from it would be Alina. LOL
