Hello, I saw this community on the front page && HAD to join. I love names < 3

My story... My name is Autumn-Rose, & I am due to have a baby boy in August. His name will be that of his father (Richard Houston Ray) He will be the 3rd and we will be calling him Houston for short. I have a question on surnames. Baby Houston's father & I will not be married until about 10 months after his birth (I'm finishing my education before we exchange our vows) & I am not sure of how the name will be displayed on his birth certificate. (I live in TN). I'm not sure if he will automatically receive my name or his fathers or if we must go through court to change his name at a later date. If anyone knows the laws and regulations on this- I'd be very thankful! Thank you!

You can name him with the father's last name or yours. I worked at the Social Security Admin for years and a lot of people do it that way. I also live in TN

i'm not sure how things work now, but my brother was born a few months before my parents were married, and was automatically given my mother's last name, then they had to change it through court after they got married....but that was nearly thirty years ago,so it might be different now.

I don't know about your particular situation, but I was born in Michigan in '89 and my parents weren't married, and the nurse told my mom she could give me whatever surname she wanted. Unfortunately my mother took that to heart and gave me her name and my dad's name hyphenated... Haha but anyway, I would assume that you can do what you like with it, too.

You can choose whatever surname you wish. I had a co-worker who had a baby with a man she was not married to, and to avoid a hyphenated name, or confusion (?) they made up a totally different surname for the baby than either one of theirs.

Also, I have a soft spot for Daisy Grace, as it is my cousin's name. Grace is her last name, though, but I still think it's beautiful.

When i was born the tag on my arm had my mothers maiden name Hillman(my parents weren't married then) and my mum always jokes that i was a Hillman for a few hours. But when they registered my name they just gave me my dads name. My parents didn't get married till 19 years later and i've always had my dads name.

When my daughter was born in Nov05, She had to have my surname while in the hospital so she could be identified to me, but on the birth certificate she took her fathers surname.
