I just recalled a name I met once on my college campus. The girl's name was Abracadabra. I kid you not. I saw her driver's license. She told me she kept her different circles of friends/acquaintances separate by having each one call her a different nickname: Abby, Cady, or Debra. And that among family, she usually was called by Abra, Dabra, or the entire Abracadabra name. She claimed to love her name. Takes a special personality! She was a very interesting character.

Just thinking, at what point when you're having a baby and writing up a list of baby names does one of you think 'oooo Abracadabra'?? the mind boggles

Who knows? Maybe they were stage magicians? I didn't think to ask.

She seemed very average outside hairstyle and jewelry/accessories. At least she didn't cope by taking to walking around wearing a Disney-esque wizard hate and robe and hitting people with a "wand"?

In the long run, it's an interesting name with opportunity for a lot of fun, I suppose.

I think my mum would just pick another name and call her that. So she'd be Maggot Twit Weezil to me and Susan Jane to her.

aldabra's name really is Aldabra. (It's an island in the Indian Ocean, particularly notable for tortoises, and I think it's a lovely name.) I wouldn't like to guess how many people have thought her name was Abracadabra at first glance.
