My mom is one of three girls. When the first girl had a daughter, the three of them decided to start a tradition: the first daughter to each girl gets her name as a middle name. So my mom, who was the first to have a girl, is named Lori, so she named her first daughter Meaghan Lori. (That's pronounced Megan, my dad mispelled it because he's a dweeb.) My aunt Sue then had a daughter who was named Katlyn Sue, and then my other aunt Jill named her first daughter Jennifer Jill. My mom and my aunt Jill had a second daughter, and I'm not sure what my cousin's middle name is, but my mom said my middle name is my gramma's middle name, so I assume my cousin's middle name is the same as mine. Anyway, now the girls in the family are starting to have kids. My sister Meaghan kept with the tradition, naming her first daughter Audrey Meaghan, so we are keeping the tradition going. My name is Bridgett, and I think that's going to be a pain in the butt to find something that sounds good with that in front of it. None of us girls in the family really have it easy, except for the one that will never have children. Anyone have any suggestions of some names, or like a "rule" that would sound good? By that I mean, some names just sound good together because of phonetics or spelling, like Maggie Mae (the -e at the end of both). I like traditional names and new ones, I just don't like weird spellings. Thanks!

I think it's a really cute tradition, it's nice having a meaning behind your name. My middle name is Julia which is my grandmother's middle name!

Good luck!

I totally understand the misspelled name thing. My two sons have the names that I chose, but my second one, with whom I was in intensive care afterward for 10 hours, and out, my husband spelled it the way he wanted. I wanted Caelum (Kay - lum), but with a K as a nod to my own family tradition. (My siblings, all four of us, all have names beginning with a K) My husband was dead set on Liam. I told him we could still nick-name him that. Lo and behold, when I finally awoke and was able to see my son, his name there on the birth certificate was Kailiam. Kay-liam. Which sounds like an element to me. Basically. We still say Kaylum, but ick....My family had all already memorized the spelling and had stuff put in that name...So I didn't change it. He's so go gunna hate me. *head desk*

This story sounds very familiar to me. My boyfriend's family always gives the first born son his father's first name as his middle name. His name is Nicholas Michael. While it makes a relatively good first name, its very hard to find a first name that flows well with Nicholas as the middle name. Thus far we've thought of "Alexander Nicholas" as about the only one that flows well. If we get married/have kids, I think we've decided to just have Nicholas be his first name and we'll just call him by his middle name...

Isn't Meaghan an Irish spelling of the name? I quite like it.

I've seen lots of different spellings for the name, I figured they're all legit somewhere...

One of my co-workers spells hers Meghann. I'd never seen it that way before. (She's 16.) I like yours too.

I like the idea of passing down a parent's first name as the kid's middle name. That's sort of how Icelanders name their kids.

Your entry reminds me of someone I met, from Maryland; the dad (Dan) and his brother both had their dad's name as their middle names, so his son became Joshua Daniel. Last I knew they were expecting their 3rd kid (#2 was a girl), but he was eager to name a boy Caleb Daniel. :-)

In my opinion, one or three syllable names would go best with Bridgette. I don't think two-syllable names flow very well with Bridgette after it.
