My reason for adding this community is different from most people. I am a writer and am always looking for names for characters. I love making sure that their names match their personalities or some aspect of their lives.

I am also clothes and jewelry designer - for dolls.

Some of my favorite boys' names are...

Aricin
Michael
Nicholas
Onyx
Aiden

Some of my favorite girls' names are...

Alida
Suzanne
Tasha
Sarah
Noelle
Tory (Victoria)

I write fantasy novels, and I find I never want to use names that I'd be likely to hear in real life, so I make them up most of the time.

Any child whose name was Tasha would spend a lot of time explaining that it WASN'T Natasha. I think I'd probably name the kid Natasha and then shorten it, so that if they wanted a more grown-up name later, it would be right there waiting for them.

Aricin just makes me think of ricin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricin), the horrible neurotoxin.

Tory just always makes me think, "The redcoats are coming!" even though I have a cousin by that name. I prefer Vicky as a shortening of Victoria.

Onyx is a little over the top, but hey, if it's for writing then you've got artistic license. :) I like the other names, especially Suzanne. You don't see it very often, even though it's just a slight variation on Susan.

Ugh, I dislike the spelling of "Tory"; the 'y' really bothers me. I spell my name 'Tori'.

The i/y change doesn't usually change my mind about a name, but in this case, I definitely agree with you. Tori is much nicer and plus, then it matches the spelling of the whole name.

Cool. :) In my experience, a name that's a little out there is only weird when you first meet a person with that name. Once you get used to the person, the name doesn't seem so odd.

My name is Victoria, but it's so formal-sounding that I go by Tori. I do love my name though.
