Date: 2007-04-01 01:47 am (UTC)...and the flower was named in honor of Carolus Linnaeus, the 18th century naturalist.
(I actually don't know whether people are using Linnaea/Linnea in tribute to Linnaeus, in reference to the little flower, or just because they like it. But it has been used as a female name since the 19th century, which pre-dates the creation of most of the names people categorize as made-up.)
