Ditto...like the beginning of Marian.

Oh, no, not in my accent. :) MAH-ree has the a vowel of car or cart. Marian has the a of cat. :D

I agree on sounds and pronouncing it that way.

Ditto. (With the "mar" sounding like Martin or Marla.)

Yup.

I should clarify, I didn't write it as MAR-ree, which would have been slightly clearer for the pronunciation, because the R isn't in the emphasised syllable for me.

Oh, I'm with you on that. I don't emphasize the R either. I was just trying to think of some examples with the "ah" sound.

I cannot think of a name that would be pronounced MOOR-ee at all in my accent. (Maury is more like m-OWWW-ree, Morrie like MOH-ree, but neither are common names over here.)

ditto.

I know someone with the unfortunate name of mariceleste (pronounced like mary-celeste) but she just goes by mari.

MAR-ee, with a bit of a long a, as in Mara.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were pronounced like Marie though.

Coincidence! Just today, I was trying to think of how you would spell the name MAH-ree to make it obvious that it's not Mary or Marie/Maree. And I came up with Mari as probably the best (although, Marie can have that pronunciation too).

So of course I think of MAH-rie cos that's what I only just thought.

But, maybe I would wonder when I saw it if it was Mary spelled differently. I wouldn't think it's Maree though.
