I have always been fond of the name Tobias, ever since reading some book. I was under the impression that it was pronounced "Toe-by-us", but I was looking at a baby name website that had it listed "toe-by-uh" - as in the s is silent. Which way would you pronounce it?

toe-by-us is the only way i've ever heard it

i guess in some language it could have a silent S but i don't know

Maybe it was a typo then. I am relieved - I was disappointed to think of it the other way.

Tobiah is a variant, albeit a rare one, but it's spelled with an H when it is!
It's Toh-BY-@s (where @ denotes a schwa, not really a u or an a) in the UK and USA, but it's often Toh-BEE-@s in mainland Europe (e.g. Germany, Scandinavia).

I've always said Toe-bee-us.

I always thought it was toe-bye-uss.

It's been a while since my Animorph days, so I don't remember the names of any of the other characters, but Tobias stuck in my head.

Although I do like both Jake and Marcus for names.

I would definantly say the way that you think it sounds is the right way as well. Our neighbor in the apartment downstairs from us had a baby in January. She named him Tobias and pronounces it the same way. :)

There are two variants: Tobias (the way you're saying it) and Tobiah. The first represents the Greek version of the name, the second - the Hebrew original. It means "God is good."

Tobias and Tobiah are two different Biblical names. I always say Tobias as "toe-bye-us" and have never heard of it being pronounced without the 's'.
