Myfanwy

I've found a few sites that give different ways to pronounce the name (muh-van-wee/ mi-vahn-wee). What is the correct pronunciation?

MYFANWY
Gender: Feminine

Usage: Welsh

Means "my woman" from the Welsh prefix my "my" combined with banw "woman".

Here in Sydney we have a radio presenter, Myfanwy Warhurst. She goes by the nickname, "Myf" (Miff). I've always assumed her name was pronounced Miff-ann-wee?

The two I know (in the UK, but not actually in Wales) go by Muh-van-wee. Y is not I but UH, F is V, AN is ANN (not AHN), and WY is OO-UH (which becomes WUH when you run it together into one syllable, or WEE in common English pronunciation).

([livejournal.com profile] dyddgu has a useful guide to pronouncing her LJ name on her profile - it's 'duhthgee', surprisingly! Welsh vowels are pretty confusing to non-speakers at first.)

I've only ever heard it as Muh-van-wee - and she went by Van for as long as I've known.

my friend's mum had this name, pronounced muh-van-wee.

I think it's such a beautiful name, shame that it has such teasing potential (this Myfanwy got called My fanny as a kid)
