[identity profile] xcuore.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My neighbours on the left have three kids; Fer, Rik & Lei. Their father is named Wil. All 3 letter names

My neighbours on the other side have also three boys named Rens, Noud & Ward. Their daddy is named Hugo. They are all 4-letter names.

WDYT of a letter-tradition??

I think it's lame, especially with such awful names like that. =/ Yuck.

ok so I read this comment after I left mine.. are these even slightly common names in the netherlands? :)

Just that names like Fer, and Noud are probably non existent in the states. We just get the lovely names like Nevaeh. Yay? :)

I never thought about it before, but my name, my son's father's name and my son's name all have six letters. It wasn't planned though.

Guessing from the names, you must not be an American. I have to warn you, the Yanks are gonna hate it.

I think my family has a letter thing going on, my brother and I were each given three letter names, though his legal name is longer. My family has a habit of giving male children two middle names, but only giving female children one.

I went and messed it all up by changing my name, though, and my mother was pissed. I didn't realize it was important to her, or I might have chosen differently.

Same-length traditons aren't too bad. I think it's better than same-letter traditions, or same-name traditions (like same first or middle name).

My name has the same amount of letters as my parents' names. I never thought about that! With that many kids though, it seems intentional. Maybe it didn't matter with the first child, but then they wanted to match the names or something.

Aside from not really liking any of the names, I'm kind of indifferent on the letter thing. If it works out that way because all the names you like for your children are the same number of letters, that's great. But if you're TRYING to come up with names and manipulating them so they all have the same number of letters, I think that's a little silly. My uncle dated a girl named Jen [just Jen, not Jennifer], whose parents named all of their girls a first name with 3 letters, and a middle name of six. I don't know any of the middle names, but I think the first names were Jen, Lee, Rae, and Ann.

I don't understand the parental habit of naming children like they are part of a product line. Why can't the "theme" just be "euphonious names with attractive meanings"? :-S

Ehh I think if the parent wants to do it.. We never planned it but my mum and da are 3 letters and all kids "short" anmes are 4 letters.. but again I doubt my mum planned that. It's interesting though!

the letter tradition would be fine if the names they picked didn't suck so bad. seriously, all of those names just suck. :(

I know a woman whose name is Mary-Catherine and she got tired of spelling it out all the time so she gave her kids short names: Jean, Will, and Paul.

I think it's horrible to name all your kids starting with the same letter, like that family with 16 kids all named with the letter J.

My mother and I both have 6 letters and my dad and brother both have 5 letters... but that wasn't planned.

I think it's way too arbitrary to be meaningful at all, it restricts your naming potential, and it's a tad obsessive-compulsive. But that's just my opinion.

I kinda like it. With another tradition, my cousin Amber and her husband Dennis have named their daughters A names (Alexsis and Ashtyn, and yes it's a horrible spelling of Alexis and I hope Lex will change it when she's older) and their son a D name (Drew).
