Kelly

What does everyone think of the name Kelly for a boy?

I knew two guys with this name and have nice/happy memories of both.

One was my senior economics teacher who I had a crush on. The other was in the kindergarden group when I worked daycare; he spelt his Kele though.

I think it's adorable. I babysat a little boy when I was a teenager named Kellen (Kellon? Kellan?) and they called him Kelley. I've liked it ever since. =)

I like the -ey ending for a boy!

I think it works if the guy's kinda Irish-looking. Both male Kellys that I've known have been of the pale redheaded variety. I do like the name and also have good associations with it.

I knew one boy named Kelly. He's really nice, but I still think of it as a girl's name.

I like it as a male name.

I think it works both ways. I've known a couple Kelly's that were guys, although the first time I met one I thought it was a funny name for a guy, that is until I got used to it. But I do agree that Kelley, (witht the extra e) looks better for a boy's name

well thats my name but i can see it as a boys name if it was spelt with an ey..seems more masuline

I love it, but it's so strongly seen as a girl's name that I wouldn't use it. Woe.

I've known some guys named Kelly and I like it a lot. One I knew went by his initials, KJ, which sounded kinda cool I thought.

Do not like at all. Kelly is a female name.

noooo! i don't like it. my name is kelly and although i've heard of it as a boy's name, i can't see it as a boy's name :(

LOATHE for a boy. Kelly, Ashley, Madison.. GIRL GIRL GIRL. I don't know why parents do things like this. I babysat a boy Kelly once and he was teased mercilessly in gradeschool.

anything with -son at the end is intrinsically masculine, if not last-name material. either way, not girls names.

[identity profile] so-there.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
interesting.. I've never before been told that the word "son" meaning "male offspring" was just my opinion. I thought it was a given here in the english language...

[identity profile] blush.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear you can't comment anywhere on lj without the mommy police having to jump in and disagree with anyone and everyone to make themselves feel self worth. The OP asked for opinions. I gave mine, just because you don't agree you don't have to tell me I'm wrong. I feel that they are girls names and I honestly pity parents who do that to their boys.

[identity profile] queen-mab.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's just that any name ending in "son" is usually a last name because it means that all those who take that last name are the "son of" or ancestor of whatever the first part of the name is. So it's not really "her opinion" that names like Madison are usually used as last names or male names.. it's just that that's how it was before someone went and said it was okay to use such names as girl names.

Not trying to be antagonistic here. I just don't think it's fair to say stuff like "I can't believe people would do things like that to their boys" when those names started out as surnames and boys' names. That, and I happen to know a Kelly whose name I think suits him well and he happens to be really nice.

I prefer it on a boy. hate it on a girl.
the only one I've known of was the older brother of an old classmate of mine, but her name was Shelly so that was kinda cheesy...

[identity profile] decembermalice.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like it. I feel like he'd get teased.

I worked in a daycare with a girl named Charlie (full name,) whose brother's name was Kele.

I had an English teacher who was so embarrassed about being named Kelly that he had his middle name legally changed to "Thor" so he would have something really masculine to balance his name out. :)

[identity profile] heathity.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I could see Kelley being used for boy, but my best friend's name is Kelly and I dont know if I could personally get past the name being a girl's name.

But, I think it could grow on me though..

Although it doesn't really suit my personal taste, I do know a couple boys named Kelly so I don't think naming a son that would be terrible at all. My only concern is stupid kids in elementary school possibly picking on them for it.

[identity profile] ouronlylight.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I like it for a girl. It might have worked for a boy forty or fifty years ago, but I think that any boy named Kelly now would be teased mercilessly throughout school.

I know this is a late comment, heh...
But my name is Kelly, if I were a boy my name would have been....Kelly...
I have been told that Kelly is a boys name. I have know idea if that is true or not. I like it either way though, I dated a guy named Kelly.... I also dated a guy whose last name was Kelly, imagine if I would have married him, My name would have been Kelly Kathleen Kelly, HA - that's terrible!
