An old friend of mine is naming her daughter Maile. I'm assuming its My-lee. Out of curiosity would you think it's pronounced May-lee or My-lee?

edit: I asked. It's definitely not MAIL. It is, in fact pronounced My-lee. Or Miley. Yes like the girl on Hannah Montana.

The only Maile I know pronounces it My-lee.

But we all call her "E-mail"

I'm Canadian - Franco/anglo bilingual - and I would pronounce it sort of like "mail" but with a long "ai" like you said, and almost like a silent L.

More like a long My, like the mustard. And I think it's gorgeous like that, but I bet all the Americans hate it.

I thought it was pronounced My-lee but I have never met anyone by that name so I'm not entirely sure.

I know it, it's My-lee. It's Hawaiian, from the name of a vine they use to make leis.

I love the name. :)

The Maile I know is, in fact, Hawaiian!

I thought May-Lee at first. But I've never known anyone with that name either

AH i love hannah montana! that's actually the actress' name in real life. her real name is destiny (blech, i know) but her dad, billy ray cyrus, nicknamed her "smiley" when she was a kid, and it just got shortened to miley.

a bit of disney trivia for you there.

I first read it as "Mail" with a silent -e. That might just be me though.

I thought I was the only one above the age of 10 who's watched Hannah Montana. :)

I liked Miley as a girls name, but the husband said it sounded too hickish.

I think we discussed Maile a few weeks ago in here. I love it. I think Mylee/Miley/etc look tacky. Maile is legit and pretty.

i like the name miley
although now that i think about it miley might make me think you say it like "millie" (rhymes with silly).. so i like the name with a less confusing spelling haha

maile would be very confusing to people reading it (teachers and the like)

My daughter's name is Maylie (pronounced may-lee). I'd still instinctually say "mail" though for Maile. That's the problem with English speaking people. ;-) There's a lot of names I think are cool but just don't work in English (Aurelie is one of them)

"Maille" in Irish is My-leh, and is Anglicized to "Molly".

At first glance, I pronounced it May-lee. Actually, I pronounced it that way at second and third glance, too. I think she's making a mistake- this will be forever pronounced wrong.
