I love Tyra Banks, but I'm sort of so-so on the name. When I first see it I always want to say it like "Teer-ra", maybe if it were spelled Taira?

Anyways, spelled Taira, I would pronounce it the same as Tara just with a longer "a" sound.

For the record, I know the little crown is spelled tiara, but most human brains will tend to read it as the "correct" word no matter how the letters are placed. Sort of like that one paragraph floating around somewhere that has almost every word misspelled, yet your brain reads right through it as if it wasn't.

Tyra looks like ty-ra to me.. You wouldn't pronounce Tyler as Tee-ler.

Taira looks like Tara, not Tyra.

I didn't even realize Taira looks more like Tara until after I reread my post. Tyra still makes me want to say Teer-ra at first (like Kyra).

I would pronounce Kyra as Ky-ra. Keer-ra would be spelled Keira. At leat in my opinion.

"ai" in my head automatically makes an "eye" sound for me,
so "taira" reads as "tie-ra". *shrugs*

Tyra's a Swedish name, isn't it? I suspect your pronunciation is closer to the original pronunciation of the name than the way we usually say it.

I can't get past the visual resemblance to the word "tyrant" myself.
