Miley/Maile???

So randomly over the last few days i keep hearing the name Miley - i read it in a book, met a girl with the name, and of course there is Miley Cyrus -

I'm not planning on having kids anytime soon, so chances are by the time i have kids this will be in the "super insanely trendy" category - but regardless - how would you spell it? And what are your feelings on the name...

Spellings: Keep in mind i would prounounce it My-Leigh

Miley
Maile
Myleigh
Mylee

I figure cause of the proununciation i would go with Miley, but the girl i met spelled it Maile, which is pretty but to me would be said Mail (like post) lee

I like the Hawaiian spelling Maile. Not really crazy about it any other way, to be honest. Miley seems like a nn for Miles. Myleigh and Mylee are just ugly tryndee names with no appeal fo rme.

Ditto.

I'm pretty sure Maile is the "official" spelling of it. As for Miley Cyrus, that's not her real name. It's actually something else that's escaping my mind right now, and it's a shortened version of her nickname "Smiley" from when she was a child, hence the different spelling.

As far as my personal preferences, when I see Maile, I would pronounce it just like you said, mail-ee. And visually, the others look terrible, so I'd have to go with Miley. I think it's a cute name, but not something I like enough to use on any future children.

Her real name is Destiny, I think. :/

[identity profile] zorianna.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that sounds familiar. I think you're right.

[identity profile] blush.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It is. Totally embarassing to know that, but my babysitting girls LOVE that show.

[identity profile] zorianna.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister loves it, that's why I know anything about her. LoL

[identity profile] blush.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Does her voice bother you in any way? It drives me CRAZY! I swear she's got some sort of impediment but the girls try to tell me it's her accent. I'm not buying it.

[identity profile] zorianna.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, she sounds just like she's wearing a retainer. It's definitely not an accent thing, and definitely annoying. LoL

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with the retainer issue. There's something just slightly lispy about her accent. Texans don't talk like that.

Her voice is also really deep for a little girl, which weirds me out.

Destiny Hope Cyrus. I was reading random stuff on wikipedia the other day lol.

I'd pronounce Maile as may-lee.

If I used the name, I'm not sure what I'd use for the spelling. Myleigh is too close to the end of my own name, but it's the one I like the most.

[identity profile] blush.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually really like Miley, but only spelled like that. It seems to have a high likelyhood of people wanting to pronounce it Millie or May-lee and that would really bother me so I don't know if I could use it.

Xavier was ruined for me in the same way. Far too many Ex-avier pronouncers out there for me.

[identity profile] smileygoldfish.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Mylee the best. It looks like the cleanest, easy-to-know-how-to-pronouce-it way to me.

[identity profile] o-honeybee-o.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah i'd pronounce Maile as may-lee too.
What do you think of Myleen as a name? There's a singer here (UK) with this name.

[identity profile] mayna.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
My daughter's name is Maylie (not mylee but close), and we haven't come across another one yet. A lot of people initially hear "Bailey" first though. I actually got her name from some name list but it was spelled Meili, which I think looked beautiful but no one would ever be able to spell it so I tried to spell it more phonetically without looking pretentious (I don't like Mayli or Maylee or Mayleigh)

[identity profile] super-bitch06.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I would probbly go with Mielie. Miley doesn't look good to me and even though I read Maile that way, I think it would cause a lot of pronunciaion problems. The last two are just way too much for me, sorry.

I really like the name, though. It's like a classier version of Kylee.

I had a good friend who was Hawaiian and she spelled her name Maile. Pronounced as you said.

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maile is the proper spelling. Anything else seems like a tryndee alternative. Miley LOOKS very childish, Maile looks more mature and like an actual name rather than a nick name.

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2007-01-12 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and also, I would refuse to "dumb down" the spelling for people who can't spell correctly. Maile is how the name is spelled, not Miley. It's not that difficult and I would hope that people would be able to catch on. I mean people are named Maia and Kaia, people can prn those correctly.

THANK YOU! :) That is very well spoken. This is why I am naming my daughter MAILE! :)

Thank you! finally: the voice of reason!

[identity profile] stars-are-fire.livejournal.com 2007-01-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded.

Growing up in Hawaii and knowing plenty of Maile's, I'd find it rather odd to see any other spelling variation.
