What do you think? I know a lot of girls get named Scout in honor of To Kill a Mockingbird, but to me that's a bit much. Harper is the author's first name. I kinda dig it.
I love it. I've been thinking about it recently. In a Law & Order: SVU episode (actually, it's rerunning tonight), a character's name is Harper. A woman, obviously.
i had that thought too. and i usually like those kinds of names for girls. i have a strong attraction to unisex names for girls. however, i really hate them for boys.
I totally agree. So many people say they love "unisex" names, but what they really mean is they love boys' names on girls. And then of course those so-called unisex names eventually turn into girls' names, the way Ashley, Leslie, and so many others have. It annoys me that giving girls a boys' name is trendy and spunky, but giving a guy a girls' name, or even a unisex name, is NEVER done. I mean, I see comments saying that names like Taylor and Mackenzie are too girlie, not realizing that they started as boys' names! (And surnames, but that's not the point here.) I'm just waiting for the day when somebody says Ryan or Logan is "girlie." (Those seem to be two of the more popular boy names for girls lately.)
i'm not using "the unisex trend" as an excuse to like what i like. you're really hung up on this "unisex trend" phrase.
and i'm not opposed to certain names for boys because it makes them sound/seem gay. i would be proud to have a gay son or daughter. there is nothing wrong with being gay and i find homosexuality completely irrelevant to the topic of baby names!
there are quite a few unisex names that i don't like on either gender: ashley (in any spelling), shannon, jamie, tracey, stacey, leslie, etc. and i do like a lot of super-feminine names for girls: lilly, rose, juliette, aurora, eve, etc.
i don't really know how to explain why i don't like certain names for boys. they just don't seem to "fit." i guess it's the same reason i don't like some names for girls, or for either sex. it's instinctual, i suppose.
I know a 3 year old girl named Harper. Personally, I do not like it. She is one of the most beautiful girls I know, but I don't feel like her name matches her beauty.
I had bad Harper Lee/TKaM-based name exposure earlier in my pregnancy, right after I found out I was having a girl, with my young english teacher who decided to name her baby girl Davis Scout Thomas(Thomas being the last name). After I told her I was thinking about naming my baby Eden Rose, she promptly replied that the name was too feminine...for a girl...
