I chose the name Linus for a future son way back before I even met my husband. it was the cutest name ever and not very commonly used. perfect, perfect, perfect. I finally gave birth to my first son (second child) in june of 2005. Linus is (almost) 19 months old.

well, guess what. they're making a Hercules movie. and including Linus. who is played by Sean Astin!

now my husband is all worried people are gonna think we named our kid after him. or that our son would think that is where his name came from! I pointed out that he would know he was born prior to the date of the movie's release.. I guess as long as we don't name our next son Samwise.... I just hope the name doesn't become all popular now that it's out there in pop culture. oh well, it's just a Hallmark made-for-tv special.

1. Sean Astin as the faithful sidekick, can you say typecasting.

2. I don't think enough people are going to watch that movie for it to even be a minor issue.

I agree on both counts.

I think more people would think of Charlie Brown's friend Linus, it's the first thing I think of, but not in a bad way.

I didn't even know Hallmark still had a channel until Tivo picked up March of the Penguins for us.

When I was 13 years old, I saw the movie "Willow" and I always thought it would be a much better name for a girl, then I paired it with my Mother's name and decided if I ever had a daughter I would name her Willow Anastasia. 15 years later I finally did, but the first thing people ask me.. "Are you some kind of 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' nerd or what?" if they are random strangers I don't have to worry about seeing ever again, I usually reply with "No I'm not. F*@# off." lol But that's just me.

Trying to find a unique name for your unique child is difficult and there will always be one or 2 people who might tease or laugh, but in the end, unless they are family, you can just ignore it.

Love the movie Willow, love love love it.
One of our top girl's names is Kaia which I first heard in that movie.

I'm sure the Peanuts character will by far still be people primary association.

I love the name Linus and actually wish it would become a *little* more popular. Enough to shed the aforementioned very strong association. It's a good name that people really shy away from... same as Felix, Oscar, or Kermit.

if he's worried about that, why isnt he worried that people will think you named him after Matt Damon in Ocean's 11?

Uhhh I wouldn't worry about it. It's already your kid's name, not like you're going to change it now. And you can't worry about that because of ONE movie. When I think of Linus, I think of 1) Charlie Brown and 2) Sabrina. How many people, after years of associating a name with one thing or another, are going to suddenly think of this random Hercules movie as the first thing when they hear your son's name? In that case anyone can say this about any movie that comes out, so I don't really know why you're so concerned.

It'll be okay. We have a Jack.

When our Jack was born, Jack was 52 and Jack is now 34. Jackson was 72 and is now 44, so you basically have 2 groups of people using Jack.

Jack does not have any other Jack's his age that we've run into in town. Jack's little sister is in school with 3 other Jacks.

So you'll run into people with his name, but it's unlikely he'll be one of 7 Linuses.

Honestly, I think most would associate it with the Peanuts character...

I understand where you're coming from. I was considering Arielle & had the same issue of wondering whether people would be like "wow she likes the Little Mermaid a lot" even though it had nothing to do with the movie. and yeah, it's post-mermaid-release & therefore more possible, but still the same idea.

I'd tell your husband not to worry too, too much. If anyone brings it up "oh like Sean Astin in Hercules?" you can be like "Uh, not so much but ok then". lol that's how I am about my daughter's name when I get "oh! like Amelia Bedelia!" I'm kind of like "more like Amelia Bergin (her name). or my great Aunt Amelia... and hi, have NONE of you people ever heard of Amelia Earhart???????"

and I'd like to point out that you didn't say *you* were all that worried about it, but it was your *husband* who was. for the record. :)

My boyfriend goes through that a lot. His name is Ferris and almost everyone he introduces himself to (or I talk about him to) ask if he was named after the movie. He was actually born 4 years before Ferris Buellers Day Off was released. There's no way his parents could have predicted that a movie with thier son's names would be one of the greatest movies ever, just like you and your husband.

Since it's only a Hallmark movie you don't have much to worry about.

I had a math teacher named Carrie Fisher who was born the year before Star Wars came out. I always felt bad for her...

I hear you. We found out about the show Lost after we named our son Sawyer, and EVERYONE assumes that's where we got the name.

Linus is a great name, but I don't think you have to worry about it taking off in popularity.
