My name is Sarah. Would it be bad to name a daughter Ciara? (Proncouced see-AIR-uh)They are similar sounding names and could get easily confused. But then again how often does a mother's and dauther's name come up in the same conversation? Mostly just by other people talking about us. Would that be annoying?

Also, I have a sister in law whose name rhymes with mine; Tara

Ciara has a hard C so it doesn't really sound like Sarah at all.

unless she's pronouncing it see-air-uh in which case it is pretty much the same sound.

i probably wouldnt do it because of the similarity but you are right, it doesnt happen often that a mothers and daughters name come up together.

Mother/Daughter names come up together more often than you'd think...holiday cards, invitations, introductions, conversations, family gatherings, etc. I personally wouldn't use such similar names (both ending in the "ara" sound) but I wouldn't cut the name off your list if you really like it just for that reason.

I don't think they sound that alike.

I wouldn't use it though because no one knows how to pronounce it right.

How are you pronouncing it? I have heard Ciara pronounced:

see-AIR-uh
see-AH-ruh
kee-AIR-uh
kee-AH-ruh
KEER-uh

Yes. That would really annoy me. Someone would shout 'sarah/ciara' and you'd both turn round...
When someone took phonecalls for the other one people would get confused.

I wouldn't but, I've heard much worse. My brother's wife is name Claudia and they named their daughters Mia and Gia. As if things didn't get confusing enough, we're Mexican and use the Spanish word for aunt which is tia, so when we visit them my daughter runs in and screams "Hi Tia, hi Mia, hi Gia!"

*rolls eyes*

Ciara sounds like keer-ah.

Now, if you're talking about Sierra, then that's another issue.

CIARA

Gender: Feminine

Usage: Irish

Pronounced: KEE-a-ra, KEER-a [key]
Feminine form of CIARAN. Saint Ciara was an Irish nun who established a monastery at Kilkeary in the 7th century.

---

Please don't make a mistake and pronounce your child's name wrong because there will be people who know how it's supposed to be said. Don't let the celebrity fool you, Ciara is not meant to be said that way and that's not a name at that point.

I think it would be annoying.

People always called me by my mother's name when I was growing up (Jennifer) and that got obnoxious. I'd think it would be worse with names that similar.
