Dec. 27th, 2006 09:18 pmI'm interested to know which names you love but can't use and why.
For example I love the name David, with it's strong sound and beautiful Hebrew meaning of beloved,
but my ex-boyfriend is called David. My mum's boyfriend is also called David, and an old friend, and my uncle...
this brings me to the issue that it's overused. And I know it would inevitably be shortened to Dave.
John is my father's name after his father, and it's another strong classic name with a great Hebrew meaning,
but my boyfriend just pointed out as I want the middle name Luke, also a family name, it would be John Luke like Jean-Luc Picard,
what's worse my boyfriend's surname even sounds similar to Picard lol.
And I love Ariel for a boy and it's Hebrew meaning but my boyfriend, who hopefully will be the father of my hypothetical future kids,
can't get over the association with a certain redhead cartoon mermaid he had a childhood crush on lol.

Date: 2006-12-27 09:35 pm (UTC)I also love the name David, I always have. I can't use it because my husband has several Davids in his life, some of whom aren't very namesake-worthy.

Date: 2006-12-27 11:01 pm (UTC)As much as I love Catherine, I probably wouldn't use it: my older half-sister is called Katherine, shortened to Kathy (and I also prefer Cathy as a diminutive), and I have negative experiences of a Katharine.

Date: 2006-12-28 12:58 am (UTC)Leland - Another name I've grown to like lately, I probably won't use it again because I have other names I love more.
Mordecai - Strange I know, but I just love the sound of this name. I have plans of using it on a dog someday, although I don't want male pets since they mark territory a lot, so that may be a problem.
Milo - I've recently really liked this name but I had a cat named this when I was little.
Ashley - I really like Ashley but ONLY on a boy. Gone With The Wind association of course.
Christopher - I really like this name but it's my cousin's name.
Tuesday - Again this is my cousin's name so I can't use it again
Selena - And yet again this is my cousin's name.
Lily - I really want to use the name but it's so popular and I also have a cat named Lilli.

Date: 2006-12-28 11:04 am (UTC)Caeden- we aren't using it because 1.) the "aden" trend is out of hand, and 2.) My husband's best friend just named his newborn Jayden.
London- If I had stayed with my ex, it's what we'd have named a baby boy...(we met in England..) Not so much an option now :)

Date: 2006-12-28 08:31 pm (UTC)Scarlett because there are no nice nicknames and i'm a nickname fan.
Olivia becuse it's popular
Sophia because it's practically my name and that would be weird, but I may use it for a middle name.
Esmé because it was the name me and my ex loved.. and now it would just be ruined if i used it on anyone else. I used to absolutely adore the name...
Ophelia because my best friend has already tagged it for the future!!
Max because it's my brothers name, & i chose it. I wasn't thinking ahead about my future kids when I was 6 years old!
Joshua because it's popular.

Date: 2006-12-28 09:59 pm (UTC)Abigail, too popular and it's a cousin's name
Laurel, another tree name I love and that's why my boyfriend rejected it.
Sirena, pronounced in Spanish (see-rr-en-ah) but his last name ends with A.
and a long list of names that he's rejected as "Too British, too Irish, too Scottish, or too Lord Of The Rings" which annoys me because I've suggested over 100 names and he's suggested.. like 5.
