Maybe it's just me, but I would think that Halley would be pronounced HAA-lee ("a" like in apple), as in the spelling Hallie. If you wanted the pronunciation Hay-lee you'd be better off spelling it Hayley/Haylie/Hailey/Hailee or even Haley.

Agreed. I love the name Haylie, but not spelled Halley. It doesn't look like it's pronounced as such.

Basically it's the double L which is making the A into a short vowel. As long as it's a single L it'll be pronounced like Hayley, no matter how you spell it really.

you should have used tick boxes.. I couldn't decide between Hillary and Hannah. (as names in and of themselves. not considering any associations with the names.)

I voted Halley, but I'd spell it Haley and I wouldn't pronounce it that way. To me, Hayley or Hailey is pronounced Hay-lee, but I'd prefer Haley pronounced Hale-ee. Anyway...

Once you're saying it fast, what's the difference between Hay-lee and Hale-ee?

It sounds totally different to me with the emphasis on HAY in the first and not in Hale-ee.

Are you pronouncing the "hale" the same way as the word "hail" ?

I'm just wondering cos I'm from Australia and sometimes the way people write phonetically on here gets confusing because most people have an american accent. I pronounce hale, hail, and hayl all the same way.

That may be causing the confusion. Yes, I'd say "hale" like "hail." Hail-ee rather that HAY-lee.

Haha.. .that stil doesn't really help, because whether you spell it as Hay-lee, Hail-ee or Hale-ee, I'd still pronounce it the same way.. Hay, followed by Lee. Or hale, followed by ee... which when said fast, the L joins the "hay" anyway so it's basically the same thing...

I wonder what I'm missing!

Well, I don't know what else to tell you since I can't call you up and say the names then. LoL I think it may have to do with accents and such or something. We'll have to agree to disagree, because I still think they sound totally different.

I believe you, I just wish I knew how they were different haha... Oh well.

I voted Halley, but I'd spell it Hailey or Hayley. I agree that Halley looks like Hale-ee too.

I third the Halley looks like Hale-ee as well. I prefer that too hay-lee. My favorite of those names though is Hilary with one l.

Hally = Haa-lee (worst case pronunciation scenario Holly) not Hay-lee.

Halley is hal-eee all the way. Basically the only way anyone can differentiate Hay-lee and hal-ee is with the double "L" spelling for the latter. The only way I'd think that was Haley would be if it had another vowel in the first half to clarify the pronunciation (i.e. Hailley or Haelley... which both look very stupid. Haley is the best). And my favorite H name is Hermione.

I strongly dislike all of those names.

The only 'H' names I like are:
Harper
Hazel
Hope (mostly as a middle name)
