Dec. 18th, 2006 03:23 pmI know there were a couple people who were looking for "Christmas-y" names for babies that are due within the next week or two, and while I'm sure all of you have got your names picked out (or are well on your way), I couldn't help but share this one.
I was just addressing a card to my cousin, whose birthday is coming up, and while I've been completely aware of both her name and her birthday for all nineteen years I've been alive, I never realized the Christmas connection. Her name is Holly.
I didn't even realize until just now that my aunt and uncle probably picked it because she was a Christmas baby, but who knows, maybe it was a coincidence. I just thought it was kind of a neat way to have a Christmas-y name without going overboard because when you see it, it doesn't automatically scream Christmas! the way some would (ex: Noel, etc.).

Date: 2006-12-18 10:26 pm (UTC)What about Mary? It kind of doesn't get more Christmassy than that.
I like Natalie and there is an old French Christmas Carol that goes "Bring a torch Jeanette, Isabella!"
You could have Nicholas for St. Nick. Oh, what about Ebenezer? I know the Spanish name Encarnation is popular for Christmas babies, and the Swedes celebrate St. Lucia's day in December.

Snow .. too obvious though
Put them together Snow Belle

Date: 2006-12-19 06:10 am (UTC)1) As soon as Christmas music starts to be played, people feel the need to point out the fact that my name is Holly, and it's mentioned in the song too. Hillarious.
2) When people first learn my name, I'd say about 70% of them follow up with the question "Is your birthday in December?" Yes, yes it is. Your name is Raine, are you an April baby? Yeesh.
3) It gets misheard often. If I'm making an order on the phone I'll often just say my name is Megan (middle name) to avoid being mistaken for Molly/Dolly/Polly/Hailey.
It's a decent, subtle seasonal name, just take into consideration that it's something they'll have to deal with constantly for a month every year...

Date: 2006-12-20 10:45 pm (UTC)I think it's tacky and best avoided, even if a Christmas-y name was already on my list, I'd cross it out if baby was due in December.
