[identity profile] ex-bluebonn.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My friend and her boyfriend (or common-law husband/partner - not sure what you'd call them at this point), are trying to conceive. They've discussed baby names and length, so I thought I'd see what everyone thinks of Alison/Allison/Alyson. Have you seen any other spellings? Are there any cute nn besides Ali? (My neighbour is an Allison, and when she was younger, she was called the Alligator, which is cute for a wee one, but what about as they get older?)

Thanks!

I like the spelling Alison. The only nicknames I can think of are Al or Ali.

I prefer Allison. It looks more complete to me. I don't know any other nicknames.

Ahh i'm really not a fan of Alison. I think it's pretty boring/ugly...

I have a friend Aly (Alyson)

This is one of the older spellings of the name, from back in the day when spellings were less standardized.

If you read Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" in Middle English (usually they'll just throw you in the deep end with this in English lit class - you can figure it out as you go along), you will see the miller's wife's name spelled in 2 or 3 different ways. One of these spellings is Alisoun.

Common in England, apparently (I know someone with the same spelling).

For the OP:
My friend and her boyfriend (or common-law husband/partner - not sure what you'd call them at this point),

Uh, partner? I mean, if he's her boyfriend *or* her husband *or* her common-law *or* her lover *or* her wife *or* whatever, partner works, doesn't it?

For the record, Allison or Alison - with a Y is uneek, IMO.

I really like Allison- but only when spelled in that fashion. I think Alice would make a nice nickname.

A previous poster suggested using Alice as a pet form of Alison.

Historically, it was Alison that was actually the pet form of Alice! The -on ending is a old French diminutive that you can also see in names like Marion, Manon, Madelon, and a lot of other names that don't happen to start with M.

As for a short form of Alison... Liss, Ace...? Nothing really jumps out as a natural candidate here, sorry!

I think if they try to force any nickname other than Allie/Aly/Ali, her classmates and teachers will not cooperate.

I like the name Alison, with that spelling as my favorite. I also like the nn Allie/Ali or however you want to spell it.

All of the Allisons I know actually go by Lissa or Alice, not an Ali/Aly in sight lol

Allison is my pick for the spelling and Alli is a wonderful nickname for young and old. I have a friend named Allison and she just turned 20 (I know she's still young) and we still call her Alli. Hope that helped =)

Allison is my preferred spelling, too. I actually really like this name. The only Allison I know personally is about 50, and doesn't go by any nicknames that I'm aware of. Allie/Alice would probably be the most common ones, like everyone's already pointed out.
