Dec. 15th, 2006 10:23 amMy friend and her boyfriend (or common-law husband/partner - not sure what you'd call them at this point), are trying to conceive. They've discussed baby names and length, so I thought I'd see what everyone thinks of Alison/Allison/Alyson. Have you seen any other spellings? Are there any cute nn besides Ali? (My neighbour is an Allison, and when she was younger, she was called the Alligator, which is cute for a wee one, but what about as they get older?)
Thanks!
Thanks!

Date: 2006-12-15 06:53 pm (UTC)If you read Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" in Middle English (usually they'll just throw you in the deep end with this in English lit class - you can figure it out as you go along), you will see the miller's wife's name spelled in 2 or 3 different ways. One of these spellings is Alisoun.

My friend and her boyfriend (or common-law husband/partner - not sure what you'd call them at this point),
Uh, partner? I mean, if he's her boyfriend *or* her husband *or* her common-law *or* her lover *or* her wife *or* whatever, partner works, doesn't it?
For the record, Allison or Alison - with a Y is uneek, IMO.

Date: 2006-12-15 07:09 pm (UTC)Historically, it was Alison that was actually the pet form of Alice! The -on ending is a old French diminutive that you can also see in names like Marion, Manon, Madelon, and a lot of other names that don't happen to start with M.
As for a short form of Alison... Liss, Ace...? Nothing really jumps out as a natural candidate here, sorry!
