"Different" Nicknames

Who do you know that has a nickname they are commonly known by that is in no way related to their name?

My friend Mark goes by "Juggs" or "Jugsy" which relates to an embarrassing story from when he was younger, and my best friend Raechel goes by "Reeko" which is a 'punk name' her younger brother and sister made up for her.

My best friend calls me Ceeg (said "siege"), short for CG, the initials of one of my internet handles, and I call her Indi (also a shortening of an internet nickname) and we call each other "boo." She also calls me "meimei" and I call her "captain" or "boss," the first two because we're Firefly nerds, the latter because we're hopelessly enamoured of the little kobold in Baldur's Gate 2, Deekin.

Another friend of mine and I call each other "Squishy." Because I love her and she is my squishy. I forget how that started, actually. I assume it was a Finding Nemo reference gone mad.

Yet another friend occasionally calls me "button" or "petal," which are apparently fairly common generic nicknames from his corner of the world, and "moonbeam," which...again, I have no recollection of where that comes from. I call him "kitten," because he's about as scary as a fuzzy wittle kitten, despite looking fairly intimidating.

A couple of my friends call me "TJ," which is shorthand for "Tara Junior," 'cause they think I look like Amber Benson.

And...I gotta know, how did "Juggs/y" originate? :D

My mom, whose name is Andrea, goes by Cookie because when she was really little, she would not answer to Andrea, only if someone said "cookie!" to her, lol. She likes cookies a lot.

My dad went by Hoss to a lot of his friends, lol. Never understood why.

I also have a friend named Kaban who goes by Ibbie.

Martika who goes by Tiki.
Chaya who goes by Sock.
Lizzie who goes by Puff.

How in the world did someone come to be nicknamed "Sock?"

[identity profile] springtide-hfa.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
One drunken night on a choir trip, he was gagged with a dirty sock from a dare.
:]

My grandma's name is Vivian. Hardly anyone calls her Vivian. She's "Tootsie" or "Toots." (With the same "oo" sound in both. Not to rhyme with "shoots.") She's had that nickname since she was little. Her dad gave it to her.

My parents frequently call me "ka-qua". My name's Monica, so I'm not sure if it derived from my name.

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
My name is Margaret, but everyone calls me Sidny or Sid. It was a name I liked (well, I liked Sydney, but I thought a different spelling would be cool, lol), and I started going by it online, and it's stuck. Pretty much everyone (except my family) knows me as Sid/Sidny.

My nickname in highschool was Bigguns (big-ins) and my name is Holly. Bigguns because I'm....busty, and "big guns" got slurred.

I'm simply known as Boob or Boobular Unit or B-Unit. If you want to "friend" Boobular Unit on Facebook, go right ahead!

The whole Boob thing comes from my senior year in high school when I randomly called someone a boob and they thought that was the strangest insult ever, so now it's my nickname. I call other people Boobs too, but I'm the main "boob".

I have a friend whose name is Carla but has gone by Bessy - to the point where just about everyone thinks it's her real names, including teachers when she was at school - since forever because she was a really messy baby. "Messy bessy" they used to say, and Bessy she became.

My friend Lisa gets called Iby (pronounced eye-bee) because she once introduced herself to some people as "I'd be Lisa" but it came out more like "I be Lisa" (kinda pirate-y). They were like, "...?" and we laughed and laughed for ages. We began calling her Iby Lisa which became Iby and it stuck.

I knew a James who was called Bob, but I have no idea why. My grandfather's eldest brother was called Walter - Joe for short. No idea how he got that either.

I know a Tim who goes bij Jimbo :\
No one knows how he got the nickname Jimbo, but he had been Jimbo for more that 5 years now. He uses it everywhere, he also introduces himself everywhere as Jimbo. Many teachers call him Jim instead of Tim because of this.

i think Jimbo sounds very cool LOL

My brothers got a friend, who goes by Speedy, relating to his baseball skills. I don't even know his real name, I don't think he was ever called anything else in high school...

I have a friend, Chris, who I call Poo on occation (Chrissypoo, it sort of relates but no one gets it at first :-D) Then he calls me Skins (Lissykins) We rock :)

[identity profile] zorianna.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is Kristy but I have a friend who calls me Pookie. I don't even remember where that came from now...And until I was like 14 my Paw Paw called me Rosalie Conchetta because he wanted my mom to name me that since our last name is Italian.

And the same grandpa calls my cousin Rhiannon "Busy Lizzy" because she was hyper when she was a baby. But the Lizzy probably comes from her middle name Elizabeth.

I occasionally go by Peaches simply because I tried to convince someone that this was my actual name and it stuck.

A friend of mine goes by Pansy because his last name is Rose...and he's a bit of a fruit.

Thought of another one. My fiance went to school with a guy named Matthew who went by Chewy. The reason for that? No clue! Apparently it went very far back, though.

Monica = Moony

It started as a joke because once I saw cows and I screamed out "Moos!" and ever since then the cow has been my 'sign'. The other reason is because whenever my husband asked where I wanted to go I'd say "The Moon" so they kind of fused and now everyone calls me Moony =)

Oh! One of my friends is Caroline and is also Moonie.

Mainly because of Carolina Moon, keep shiiiiining.

I've known some pretty interesting ones, but the two that are sticking out in my mind right now are:

Aaron- Skippy
Robbie- Scrob... derived from any phrase ending in "my knob" and not something I'd like to go into any more detail about=)

A good friend I used to work with called me Ashypoo and then shortened it to poo poo... when she started yelling across the restaurant "poo poo" and expected me to answer, I decided I would call her "pee pee" and thus we'd greet each other "POO POO!!" "PEE PEE!!" and those around us would look at us like we were crazy!

My friend and I are Floozy and Flopsy - I started calling her my floozy as a joke, and our other friend always mispelled floozy as flopsy, so that's how I became that.

My cousin Chris is called Woody, although I don't remember the alleged reason for it (he has three brothers and they all swear it has some completely clean meaning, but would you believe them? I certainly don't). His brother Corey is sometimes called Pudge, cuz he was chubby for a while when he was younger.

My sister and I sometimes call each other Banana and Turtle, which are completely unrelated to our actual names.
