What do you think of Ariel for a boy?

No

Way too "disney princess" for me.

if he was a boy that had flowing red hair, wore a sea-shell bra and had a fin for legs... perhaps.

I love it.
I pronounce it Ah-ree-el.

I don't associate it with Disney either even though I was obsessed with the Little Mermaid when I was a child.

Oh speaking of Ariel Sharon his nick name is Arik which I also think is really nice.

I think he'd be a little mermaid.

A friend of a friend named her son Luca Ariel. It's grown on me (and he is seriously the cutest little boy ever.) Wouldn't use it for a first name, though.

boy or girl or mermaid, still sounds like areola to me.

YES.

It's the name of an impish spirit in Shakespeare's The Tempest. I like it.

I think it's fine. I know a boy named Ariel (Ah-ree-el).

[identity profile] xanya.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
It can definitely be used for a boy, but probably only pronounced with the long A (ah-ree-el), as others have said.

Although his gender was exactly specified in The Tempest, it's generally acknowledged that Ariel was a boy, so... I don't see the problem with using it.

I like it and the nickname Ari, but not unless you live in a culture where there are other boys with the name. In America it's too girly.

I think it's nice in theory, but totally not practical. I think a boy Ariel would be teased a LOT in school.

No way. No masculine enough
