[identity profile] dragonfly-magik.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am 19 weeks pregnant with a girl.
Trying to choose a name with my husband, here is what we have so far:

Tula Cecile

Ella Cecile

Cecile is my middle name, mom and grandmother's first name so I really want to use that.
The first name is what I can't seem to settle on. I love the two I have listed above but am not sure if Tula feels right (for a few weeks it really did) and with Ella- I don't want 5 other girls in her class to have the same name.

thoughts? suggestions?

yes it is. I'm very fond of adri-names and those close to it
adri, adria, adrienne, adriele, adia, aerie (not that new ae clothing line, it's my cousin's name)... so on and so forth.

If you're not sure if the name feels right try yelling it, both in an angry (get your butt in here) tone and in a nice (dinner time) tone. Write it down somewhere that you'll see it many times a day (bathroom mirror, fridge, etc.). If you start getting "tired" of the name then its not the right name, your daughter will have it for life. If the name starts sounding more and more like the name of your baby then it may be the right name. This worked for my husband and I when we were trying to make our final choice on the boy's name.

"No Noah! Noah, no! no no Noah! No!"

There are not going to be 5 other Ellas; that's just not going to happen. Realistically, there possibly could be 1 other Ella, 1 Ellie, and 2 Emmas. Does *that* bug you?

Tula is pretty cool.

It doesn't matter what your family thinks. There is no magic name that everyone will like, especially before there is even a baby to attach it to. Worry only about what you like. People have a very hard time warming up to names that are at all uncommon. But then they LOVE them later and tell you you were right all along.

And a Bella, Isabella and Annabella... :)

OP: How about names related to Ella, like Eleanor? Elaina? Lenor(a)? All sound beautiful with Cecile and won't be as common as Ella.

Let me start by saying "Cecile" is gorgeous and I adore your icon - Best. Movie. Ever.

If you like these names, why not think of some names that they can be used as nicknames for?

Tallulah Cecile
Petula Cecile

Danielle Cecile
Chantelle Cecile
Isabella Cecile
Adelle Cecile
Anabelle Cecile
Arabella Cecile
Arielle Cecile
Stella Cecile
Gabriella Cecile
Janelle Cecile
Joelle Cecile
Luella Cecile
Noella Cecile
Rochelle Cecile

Or perhaps some of these may strike your fancy (there's a lot of "la" ending names... based on your two above choices I'm guessing these are your favorite sounds?):
Claudia Cecile
Bianca Cecile (very Shakespeare)
Mila Cecile
Laila/Leila/Layla Cecile
Ayla/Isla Cecile
Lilia Cecile
Romana Cecile
Teja Cecile (pronounced "TAY-AH")
Aria Cecile

Tula reminds me of when I was in Spanish class learning about a place in Mexico where human sacrifices were performed. So I Wikipedia'd it, and found out that it's not only that, but also apparently slang for "penis" in Chile! Make of those random facts what you will. :) I see someone else suggested Tallulah. It's similar, and I certainly think it's nice. Good luck and congratulations no matter what you decide, though.

I'm sick of the name Ella, and I don't like it much anyway. I'm not nuts about Tula, but at least she won't be one of ten. My friend's one year old is in a playgroup with three Ellas.

Issues of popularity aside, I think Ella Cecile is really beautiful.

I think you need a 3 syllable name to go with Cecile as a nickname. The 2 syllable names aren't flowing very well.

I think you need to be prepared for a giant number of Ellas and Ella-variants. Between the number of Ellas, Eleanors, Bellas, Stellas, and Arabellas born these days... and Isabellas alone! When Halloween rolled around this year, we had six Ellas come to our door. Sure, they might not all actually be named Ella - but so many are called that, I just don't think it's worth it. Ella is like Aidan - there might not be an Aidan in your class, but there will definitely be a Brayden, or a Jaydan, or a Shayden, or... etc. I guarantee you, OP, that there wouldn't be many Tulas out there

To put it in other terms, Ella is as popular now as names like Michelle, Tiffany, and Crystal were in the 80s. I know I always had a number of these in all my classes.

Ella is...eh. Too popular, too cutesy. I like Tula, though. Different, interesting, similar to Ella. Love Cecile.

Here are some other options you might like:

Nora Cecile
Tessa Cecile
Ivy Cecile
Eden Cecile

If Ella is too popular for you, think of some other names. Tula sounds made up. I understand that it's not after researching it on Google, but I doubt other people go to the trouble. I just don't think it makes a nice name.

Tula is totally awesome, and the human sacrifice thing makes it even cooler. The slang connotation doesn't appear to be very pervasive at all.

I strongly support this name!

haha, yeah, fallingtopieces upthread said, "Tula reminds me of when I was in Spanish class learning about a place in Mexico where human sacrifices were performed."

Again that's not something any normal person would think of. I really think Tula is a lovely name.

I really don't like any of the names, but I do think Cecile is pretty :)

Juliet Cecile
Leila Cecile

What about Tala? I think Tala Cecile is prettier than Tula. I knew a little girl named Tala and she was such a delight. Isn't the girl in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" named Tula?

Tula sounds very floofy and immature. I don't like it at all.

Ella is super common (esp as a nn with all the Isabellas, etc running around) and I don't like it as a stand alone name. What about Eleanor nn Ella? Or how about Elia as the first name?
