I think I've decided on names.

IF I HAVE A GIRL: ARIANNA NOELLE MUNIZ

IF I HAVE A BOY: NATHEN MICHAEL MUNIZ
(With a "E" instead of the Nathan)

Yay or Nay?!

Thanks everyone!

I love both names. Just a side note though, I dunno about Nathen, but Arianna is in the top 100 names of last and this year. That's why we nixed it from our lists.

If you don't mind that fact, I'd say the decision is made :)

Not a fan of the E spelling with Nathan, and I'm not the biggest fan of Nathen Michael. I do like Arianna Noelle though.

Why would you spell Nathan that way? It doesn't add anything to the name, only makes it annoyin to spell. He'll have to tell people his name is "Nathan with an e instead of a second a" forever.

"Nathen" isn't unique or original. It's still Nathan, just spelled wrong.

I don't mean to come across rudely, but compared to the amount of people who have responded saying that they don't think that spelling is a good idea (i.e. practically every comment), then saying "I don't know why, I just like it" doesn't seem to hold much weight as a solid reason to go against what the majority of people are saying. The beauty of a community like this is that it can help you predict any problems your kid will have with a name, if you consistently get the same criticisms. I think that if you love it spelled Nathen, and don't really mind the spelling Nathan but just prefer it Nathen, it's probably worth just calling him Nathan to save the trouble it will evidently bring. It will still sound the same. Anyway, it's your child and you can call him whatever you want, Nathen is a million times better than many other names.

I like Arianna too, not a huge fan of Noelle but that's just a personal preference, a lot of people on here seem to like it.

Well.. question. What do you think of the name Kristin? My name is Kristin, but it's CONSTANTLY spelled Kristen. I personally like my name because it's more unique than Kristen (or was, until that Cavallari girl came along, lol), but I see that a lot of folks here are against "yoonik"-ly spelled names. What's the verdict on mine?

Just curious. I was named after Kristin on Dallas (thanks, Mom...), so it's not like my Mom (or any other Mom) just pulled it out of her hat.

Kristin is an established spelling. I think it's used a lot in Scandinavian countries. Actually, that's probably how I would intuitively spell your name if I heard it. I don't think it's "yoonik," I think it's just as legit as Kristen - kind of like Elizabeth and Elisabeth, you know?

As for Nathen.... there is one CLEARLY correct established spelling, Nathan, and the spelling Nathen seems like it was pulled out of someone's butt for no reason, unless it was to annoy its bearer.

I'm a Kristen, and I get it spelled Kristin a lot. There's no winning :) Or, when people see it written down as Kristen, they called me Christine, which I think is ridiculous. I have no clue where they're coming up with that.

Date: 2006-12-13 02:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_crystalmyth/
LOL! There really isn't any winning, then.

Except it always used to bother me that on personalized stuff, they always left Kristin out, and sometimes even Kristen. But they had some pretty obscure names like...Mikayla and whatnot. I mean, I know that's a pretty popular name, but...Kristin's been around for quite some time.

I think Kristin is a nice way to spell it. But Kristin is a name that has more than one widely recognised spelling, as well as many related names that are commonly used (e.g. Kristy, Kirsten, etc.) so it's not as unexpected when someone uses a variant spelling. However, Nathan is one of those names that seems to be so strongly consistent in how it is spelled that people aren't even usually going to ask "how do you spell that", they'll just assume. I think that's the difference, if that makes sense?

Yep.. sure does. Lol.

Nathen does bug me. It looks almost trashy.

Love them both except for the E in Nathen.

Agreed w/ this comment. Nathen looks too much like "Nat Hen."

Spelling Nathan with an e will just cause people to constantly misspell his name.

And although my name [Jaclyn] is spelled correctly, I can tell you how ANNOYING it is to have to misspell your name and correct people your entire life. You wouldn't believe how many times I've gotten Jacklyn, Jaclin, Jacqueline, Jacquelyn, ect.

If you can spare him the annoyance of that, I would try.

Arianna Noelle made me chuckle at first because I know a little girl who was born about 2 months ago named Adrianna Nicole. Not the same, I know, but the same basic sounds. :]

As far as I can tell, Jacqueline is the original spelling of that name. (french female form of Jacques). I've never seen anyone spell it Jaclyn. I do agree with your point about Nathen though. That's the only accepted form of that name whereas Jacqueline has several accepted spellings so I don't think it's as big of a deal that way.

To me, Jacqueline and Jaclyn are two entirely different names, based on pronunciation.

Around here, it is JAH-kweh-lyn and JACK-lyn.
But it may just be a regional thing with the pronunciations.

I'm not nearly as irked when people spell it Jacqueline because that is an actual spelling of an actual name. The things that make me twitch are seeing Jacklyn [because it just looks ugly] and Jaclin.

I was just trying to stress that if you take a simple name with a simple spelling and change even one letter, you're asking for a lifetime of having to correct people when they are spelling it. :]

Arianna Noelle is beautiful.

Nathen Michael irks me... here's why... first, in my opinion, it should be spelled "Nathan", no if's and's or but's. Spelled correctly it's a great name - but I don't like it paired with "Michael"; they're both 2 syl. names with the stress on the same syl. making it sound repetitive and, well, blah to me. How about: Nathan Zachary?

I wouldn't mind NathAn Michael, but with the E and the last name starting with M, I don't like it. Alliteration and misspellings are not your friend. I'm not crazy about Arianna, but I do like Noelle. I'd prefer it as a first name, actually.

Nathen looks like a misspelling of Nathan - which is what it is, as far as onomastics is concerned. I'd infinitely prefer Nathan. Arianna is lovely.

I like both your names.
Honestly, the -en isn't that bad nor that YuNeQ that it freaks me out nor would it be that bad for him.

When you find out if it's a boy or girl? How far along are you?

yay to Arianna Noelle, even though Arianna is kind of blurgh and looks like a new found made up name.. and is a trendy 'ana' name..
I love Noelle as a middle name.

Nathen with an E is just pointless yooonik making right? Silly.. i dont like natha/en it makes me think of a snake... no idea why and it makes no sense because i love Ethan!

Sorry, but a big NAY. Arianna reminds me of Aryan and that's a horrible association. Nathen just looks stupid. Nathan would be fine. You're setting him up to have to correct people CONSTANTLY on the spelling of his name.

oh and btw I really like Adrianna which someone mentioned in an earlier comment. It has less of the Aryan feel, but apparently I'm the only one who makes the Aryan connection so I guess you're okay with that.

No, you are NOT the only one!
It's the first and only thing I think of when I see Arianna - I'm always surprised that nobody else seems to care, and that most people like the name.
I've stopped commenting about it because I thought I was the only one, but I'm glad to see that's not true :)

Well I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Everytime someone has that name on their list that they post here, I expect to see a lot of comments pointing that out, but there never is any. I don't understand it, honestly it's all I see in the name as well. Sometimes I wonder if people even know what it means... I just CAN'T see how you could use that on a child.

"Sometimes I wonder if people even know what it means"

Ariana means very holy. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

Unless the "it" you were referring to is Aryan. Then I could see why you'd say it's a bad thing.

I have a bad personal association with Arianna, but setting that aside it's a very pretty name.

I like Nathan, but why are you spelling it that way? My biggest pet peeve on naming is when people change the spelling of a perfectly good name -- it does nothing but make things hard for the kid.

i agree with the Aryan thing.

arianna is over-used (i know about 4 or 5 elementary school aged girls with it) but it does sound good with noelle.

nathen is downright stupid. my name is spelled Katharine (after katharine hepburn) and everyone spells it with an e instead of an a. some people cant even pronouce it correctly because its spelled wrong. do your son a favor and spell it the way it was meant to be spelled. being yooo-neek will only get him so far when hes 35 and applying for a career and they mess up his W2 forms or something.
