 so maybe some other of you name nazi's - I mean connoisseurs - like myself will at least sympathize...

I was taking my daughter's clothes down to the laundry room of our apartments and I run into my pseudo-neighbor (she's just a lady living with my actual neighbor & taking advantage of her if you want the truth but that's neither here nor there).  She asks me how the baby's coming along blah blah blah and then says "Do you know what you're going to name her?"  

I knew I should have just kept my mouth shut but in spite of myself I told her "Georgia.  but we haven't been able to decide on a middle name yet."

Now.  If she didn't LIKE Georgia, that's ok with me.  and if she did and had a semi-helpful suggestion on a middle name, that would have been alright too.  I can handle the criticism of others not liking a name I've chosen.  this was just... Random?

She came out of nowhere and told me "You should pick a name that's close to your daughter's name" (which is Amelia Drew, but I think this lady only knows her first name).  I'm like "what do you mean?"  thinking that maybe she meant that I should start a little family naming trend with the one syllable middle name or something.  

But instead she said " you know, like Amanda Renee."  

I was like 'Oh. Ok. well, Rob doesn't like many names and it was really hard to agree on that one so..."

and that was the end of the conversation.   there are a couple of things that bugged me.   Why would you say an entirely different name when I said we had picked out a first name but not a middle?  and why would I want a name that is really close to my other daughter?  wouldn't that be kind of confusing?  and why is Amanda Renee the obvious, logical choice to go with Amelia Drew?  It was the way she said it like it was the only name in the universe.  It was weird.

maybe I'm just being pregnant and hormonal or something.  I'm not like, angry or irked, simply a little bewildered.

LOL. Maybe because both start AND end with "a" sounds? And Renee is old school filler, so like someone a little younger would state Amanda Grace - just the first thing that pops in their minds? Who knows? None namer logic never makes a bit of sense to me. ;)

When I'm pregnant I resolve to never tell anyone irl what the naem is, instead responding with all questions with "We haven't decided yet... You have any ideas?" And then later I'll laugh. :D

yeah, it was just so random that she had this very specific name all ready. Like she only asked me if we had one picked so she could tell me that I should use her choice.

I guess that's what I get for answering her at all. damn me doing laundry when I'm all tired. :)

Oh that's no fun! You should try picking a hideous name and telling them with a straight face, "We've picked Edna Ethel.. no, not after family, we just REALLY loved it!" And try to stifle giggles while they struggle to think of something polite to say.

I tend to agree that they're in a similar vein without being matchy. either way I don't like/wouldn't use Amanda. (nothing against any Amandas it's just not for me.)

on a semi-unrelated note, the name Quinn now irks the crap out of me. I liked it a lot 'on paper' but then I was in line at Borders and I heard these two people talking about someone in their family named Quinn and what they should get him/her (the gender was unclear)for Christmas and the more times they said "Quinn" the more I wanted them to stop. It just did not sound nice as a name anymore. maybe it's like when you say a word so many times it stops sounding like a word or something.

I don't tell people what we're naming our daughter because I hate the way they reacted when we told them our name plans for our first baby! I get really annoyed when people tell me they don't like our chosen name.. if I wanted an opinion I'd have asked, surely? When the baby's actually here it will be too late to say anything other than "Ooh how lovely" - ha!

I don't think Amanda and Amelia go together at all. And why Renee?! It's not her name, or her daughter/mother/best friend's name, is it?

I think Amelia and Georgia sound good together :)

IKWYM. I don't really care if she likes it or not. she asked what we picked & I told her. really, no matter if anyone likes it or not, that will be her name & people will have to call her that bc IT WILL BE HER NAME & they have no choice.

you know what bugs me about that situation? why would you want to "give away" your favorite names like that? I mean yeah, you could still use them regardless if someone else did, but if I like a name enough to consider using it on a real kid, why would I want to encourage everyone else to name their child that? My girls don't have to be the ONLY Georgias or Amelias in the world, but I don't necessarily want them to have to be Georgia B. and Amelia B. their whole lives either.

I figure that's what she thought too. and all I can think is that I was staying away from names like Athena or Alana or Arianna, for instance, since the starting and ending the same as Amelia might be overkill.

I agree, and am glad to see someone naming this way. I don't mind it if there's a tiny similarity like the first letter (usually), e.g. Sarah and Samuel, or the same ending, e.g. Anna and Laura, but I wouldn't go for any more than that... and would generally avoid it where possible. Especially first letter, it would get annoying and confusing.

thanks! I was really surprised that I got so much positive feedback on it from this post. I felt that I got mixed reactions when I asked opinions on it back when. and from people IRL too. like they expect me to say something entirely different and when I say Georgia they're surprised or something and don't know what to say.

A neighbor of ours did the same thing. Asked what we were having then asked what we were considering. When I said the final names she suggested something completely different. We're going with Georgia too, by the way, as one of our finalists for a girl. Beautiful name. =]

and of course, I'm just so partial to Amelia. it was the name I kept coming back to, no matter how many others I considered. My husband didn't like it as much as I would like, but there was NO talking me out of it.

Georgia has become kind of that way to me. It was not even on the list for a while and then suddenly it was the only name I could really imagine using.

I'm still stuck on the middle name. nothing is feeling 'just right' to me at all...

ummm not so much with the trendy or religious. we like less common but not way, way out there. Amelia has the one syllable mn, which is a pattern my husband likes and we were sort of sticking with but not a MUST. also, she's got the boy name on a girl thing going on (Drew), which I'm not a huge fan of but my husband really likes (he wanted to use Tristan for Amelia SO badly and I could not bring myself to do it) and I'm willing to concede on that as long as it's the mn only.

ok, how terrible is this? I really will not use the name Chloe because my husband likes it SO much. I have a mental block against it, even though I kind of like it.

and my nn is Brie (prn the same as Bree) and we're not so much with the namesakes.

I have always really loved Sara but thought it was maybe too much bc Georgia & Sara both end in the 'uh' sound. and I like Noelle (this spelling for some reason) too.

gah. I think being pregnant is destroying my brain. NOTHING sounds right to me. I'll have to post a poll or something on some of the other options we're thinking of so far and have other people give me some input.
