I like them all actually, except I would spell Ada as Adah so it didn't remind me of Assistant District Attorney (but maybe I watch too much Law & Order). If I had to rate them in order of likingness, it would go: Tessa - just such a soft and pretty name, Tess is a nice nickname too Lana - very pretty Fiona- I've always loved this name. I had a love affair with Celtic names when I was younger Deirdre -It's pretty but kind of awkward to say Ada(h)- As long as it's pronounced Ay-dah I like it.
I was going to say that I like Lana, but the first commenter has ruined it for me now!
I like Tessa, it's unusual and is a nice sound (sorry, I'm not very good at saying why I like/dislike names :/, I'm trying) But I don't know how well it would age. Can't quite imagine an adult called Tessa, but I can imagine a gilr and old lady.
Fiona I sort of like, but it always seems a bit grown up. I know that probably sounds stupid, but I've only known one Fiona who isn't middle-aged. So for a while I didn't like it because it's dull. But it's been growing on me recently. It's classic I guess, without being common.
Deirdre I hate. It's such an ugly sound, and totally old lady-ish. Euck.
Ada is ok. But it seems incomplete, and I can't quite imagine it actually being used as a name on someone. In theory it's pretty, but I don't think it will be pretty once it's someones name. Does that make sence?
Lana - I am on the fence about this name. Aesthetically, it sounds just ok to me. I like the Lana Turner association, but watch Smallville and dislike it bc I dislike the character with that name. also for some reason I think it sounds sort of... uppity. never realized I really thought that til now.
Tessa - I really like this name. I think it's one of those names that went away for a while and is back again now. I know a really cute little girl named Tess (actually it's short for Theresa technically) and it fits, but I can also see it aging well.
Fiona - I really like this one too. It always strikes me as a little spunky and I like the Celtic/Gaelic origins.
Deirdre - again with the Irish. I've got positive and negative associations with this name, but overall, mostly positive. I think it's one of those names that's underused especially considering how many people seem to like Irish names. It also depends on how you'd pronounce it. I don't like DEE-druh, I do like Dear-druh and I know one person who says it DER-dree (almost like Dirge-Ree) and I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.
Ada- I don't particularly care for this name bc it reminds of this lady I knew once. It seems very dowdy old lady to me for some reason.
I agree with poespretty that Ada is dowdy. It doesn't sound very graceful to me.
And I HATE Deirdre. I just think it sounds harsh and hideous. I like names that are substantial, not flimsy and frilly, but this one is just plain ugly. The sound is not pleasant at all and it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue with those d's and r's. Blech. One of the ugliest names I can think of. I knew a Deirdre once. Nobody ever spelled or pronounced her name right. Some people couldn't even repeat it back to her right when she told them how it was said. (DEER-druh). She found it very frustrating.
I love Fiona and Tessa. They are simple but graceful and elegant.
Lana- prefer Alana but it is still a pretty name, makes me think of smallville. Tessa-mmm i dont like this name for some reason but i'm not sure why. Fiona- princess Fiona i like it! Deirdre- reallyhate, old womans name. Ada- very very pretty.
Lana - I really like this. It's very sweet and simple. Tessa - I like this one too. I don't know why, I just like how it sounds, lol. Fiona - not a fan, I don't like the "ona" part and how that sounds. Deirdre - don't like, I never know how to prn it correctly! Ada - really nice. Sounds very classic without being overused (Ava).
> Please tell me more than if you like them or not. WHY?
I've always wondered why people think that hearing a stranger with unknown taste say "I hate it!" or "I think it sounds ugly!" is actually helpful. Of course, maybe they don't want to be helpful.
Lana - I think of Lana Turner (whom IMDB references as "the sweater girl"), and get a sort of vintage pin-up image from this one. Now, to be honest, I have never seen any of Lana Turner's movies, so I wanted to learn a little more to see if maybe I might not be giving her enough credit here. When I went to IMDB, I read about "seven marriages, affairs almost too numerous to mention, a long bout with alcoholism and the famous incident where her gangster lover, Johnny Stompanato, was killed by her daughter...," etc. Oh dear. Even the part of me that finds vintage things charming was pretty disenchanted by this point.
Tessa - I don't have any feelings one way or the other about this one. I am wondering if I might prefer it as a pet form (pre-emptive boot to the head to anyone who thinks seriously about suggesting "contessa").
Fiona - For your name geek side: history of usage of the name (http://www.medievalscotland.org/problem/names/fiona.shtml).
Deirdre - The name itself doesn't jump up and grab hold of me (blame long-time soap actress Deidre Hall for that), but the legend is terribly, tragically romantic. So I would admire its usage, just as I would admire the usage of Isolde or any semi-obscure heroine if I knew the namer had chosen it with the legend in mind.
Ada - I still don't understand how people can be so besotted with Ava and Aidan and have a bad reaction to Ada. After all these years, it can't be a bad reaction to "The Piano." I associate it with Ada Lovelace, of computer fame.
Lana I like because of a beautiful little friend I had when I was in kindergarten or 1st grade. She was from Hawaii and I thought she was the most exotic wonderful thing ever. When she moved back to Hawaii she gave me her nightstand lamp that was shaped like a poodle. We were totally BFF....
Tessa - I want to like but don't. To me it doesn't really flow off the tongue very well and it feels incomplete. But I love the way it looks, and I think it has many nice qualities.
Fiona - I'm not sure how I feel about this one any more. It's been as high as top 10 for me, but I'm not really feeling it lately, not sure why.
Deirdre - At a Renaissance Fair I met the most beautiful little girl with this name. Long brown hair, dressed in red velvet garb and carrying a little bouquet of flowers (weeds... but you know). She told me "Hello, my name is Deirdre" and then did a courtsy. SO CUTE. I've been in love with her name ever since. I totally don't get the harsh/ugly comments. I think it's lovely. I've never met anyone old with the name, so that might have a lot to do with my impression.
Ada - I highly doubt it has anything to do with The Piano. I doubt most in the community have seen that movie, to be honest. I agree with you - it seems like a natural winner after Ava and Aidan. Hmmmm...
Meant to post that to the thread overall, and not to you specifically. Oh well.
I agree with you. I think most people only want an excuse to throw their own opinions around. Being helpful or not doesn't even enter their minds. But yeah, I must say I have *never* been influenced whatsoever by someone telling me nothing more than "I hate it" pr "I only like ***, *******, and ****." Who cares???
> I have *never* been influenced whatsoever by someone telling me nothing more than "I hate it" pr "I only like ***, *******, and ****." Who cares???
I might take such an opinion into consideration if it came from someone whose naming taste I respect and admire. However, someone like that typically would provide some reasoning for a negative assessment, so it's not likely that this would occur.
If the person who said it was someone whose tastes I didn't respect, honestly, I'd take it as a vote in favor of the name.
Lana - Reminds me of Lana Lang and that's not such a good thing Tessa - One of my favorite names ever but my hubby hates it Fiona - I have a snake named Fiona but aside from that I think it is a very pretty name Deirdre - Reminds me of the word 'dirty' Ada - well technically it means faerie in Spanish but with an 'h' added in there so the name reminds me of cute little faeries and that's a good thing =)
Lana reminds me of Superman. My grandmother is also named Launa. I hate that spelling. I really like the name Tessa, (or, alternatively, Tess) a lot, but only as a first name. I'm indifferent about Fiona. Deirdre is the name of a soap opera actress (or character?), and I remember always pronouncing the name wrong whenever I saw it. Ada, to me, is an old woman's name, though a child could probably go by Addie

Fiona is okay. To me it's one of those names where I feel like the parents were trying a little *too hard. But it's not a bad name at all.
Dierdre conjures up images of a 35 year old chain smoking secretary with frizzy black hair. I've never known a Dierdre.
And Ada is the name of my crazy aunt. I think it could work on a little girl, but my association has kinda ruined it LOL
