Colin or Collin

What's the traditional spelling for Colin/Collin?
I have a pet peeve for names with nontraditional spellings so I'd like to know which one of the two came first.

Colin

and we already have a son named George.

Colin. It's derived from Nicholas/Nicolas, via Cole. Doubling the L happened very late in its history (see also Allison, Hillary).

I thought that Colin was pronounced "Cole-in" and Collin "Call-in", two different names...but I could very easily be wrong...its early and i'm tired.

I love Colin, but cant overlook it's closeness to colon. =(
