What are names in other languages that are the equivalent of James?  I want to give my [future] kids names honoring people that have shaped my life,--James is my brother's middle name--but I don't like common names.

www.behindthename.com says that James somehow came from Jacob. It also has a list http://behindthename.com/php/extra.php?extra=r&terms=james of related names to James. I don't know how they are related, but maybe that will help you somehow.

Seamus (my son's name) is James in Gaelic.
It's pronounced Shay-mus. Kinda like Sean being pronounced Shawn.

Diego...believe it or not, is a spanish form of James. Personally, I love them both.

Other two version of James in italian, besides Giacomo, Diego and Iago (in order of popularity... Iago is very unusual), is Jacopo (pronounced YAH-co-po) and its variant Iacopo (pronounced the same). Then I think there is Lapo (it was a nickname for Giacomo/Jacopo at first) but I'm not too sure about it.

About Diego equivalent of James: Diego is probably a variant of Santiago, which is a combination of "saint" + Iago (form of James). However, behindthename says it's most probably derived from the medieval name Didacus, meaning "teaching" (from ancient greek). No James there, then.
A variant of Diego is Dago, also.

I would stay away from using Dago as a child's name. It's used as a racial slur in the US (UK too, I believe), usually against Italians, Spaniards and/or Portuguese.
