I would like to know if madison (for a girl) is really so popular

e.g. :
I always thought emma is really popular but if I think about it I only see it very often at the internet
I only know one girl with the name emma...
I work with children and meet so many kids every day...

how many madison´s do you actually know ?

I really really love this name and it´s absolutely not popular in germany (where I live at the moment) but I may move to los angeles or australia within the next years.....

Lots. On any playground in Toronto, where I live, a parent calls out "Madison! Time to go home!" and about six of the little girls look up.

The only Madison I know of is a cartoon character.

I have honestly never met any Madisons but that's porbably because I'm in the UK. I really love the name though!

I don't know any but that's because I'm not around a lot of little kids, and the name only reached its popularity peak in 2001 (#2). Its current popularity is #3 in the US.

Same here. I know plenty of Jennifers, an Ashley, tons of Jessicas and 3 Melissas. All were popular in the 80s (when I was born) Madison is popular now so the chilluns of this current generation will be seeing tons of Madisons, Emmas and Hannahs the same way I know all of the ones I mentioned. Although my mom's close friend just had a grand daughter named Madison. So there's one I know OF but don't really know.

Yep, I'm of the Jennifer-Jessica-Melissa generation too. So glad my parents didn't give me a popular name like that! :)

A girl who used to go to the school at which I work was named Madison. She is 6 years old now.
That is the only Madison I've ever met.

I know one. It is the capitol of Wisconsin.

you'll note that it is a city, not a name. and if you want to argue "the city was named after a person" then it's a last name.

oh yeah, and my neighbor around the block has a kid named Madison who's probably at least 12 or older by now. it was the first time I ever heard anyone use it as a name before. her mom was a disgusted as I was.

Well I have to say that you can't judge a name's popularity based on how many people you know with that name. I mean, I don't know any Emmas or Madisons, but I don't know very many small children to begin with. It doesn't mean that there aren't a million of them running around my city just because I haven't personally met them.

I agree. It's obviously popular (http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/), no matter how many Madisons the people in this community know or don't know.

Agreed. It's been in the American top ten for nearly 10 years. Literally thousands upon thousands of Madisons have been born in the last 10 years, and whether I know them or not, that is a lot of Madisons. I don't know that that would be a big problem in the short run in German or Australia, but if Madison ever wanted to move to the states for any reason... yeah, she'd be Madison #350234897291.

It doesn't matter. It's Murphy's Law that they hide themselves until *after* you make the birth certificate official. Then all the Madisons crawl out of the woodwork and you see them everywhere.

If you stay in Germany and it's not high on the charts there, then great. But if you're coming to the U.S. and are concerned at all about it being common, then I wouldn't use it. You might not know any now, but your kid would.

I work in a daycare that has 160 kids between the ages of 6weeks and 8years old. There are four Madisons, two Addisons, and two Madelines (throwing the other two in there because they are similar and all the Madisons/Madelines are called Maddy).

I don't know a lot of little girls and they are the one's being saddled with these names. When I think about popularity, I see what the current ranking is and compare it to the same rank the year I was born and see how many of those people I knew growing up. www.babycenter.com has lists of the top names by the decade and it helps a lot.

I think Madison is a fairly American name, but here in Australia it is popular too. I have only met 2 or 3 that I can think of, but they were all young.
