Martin is probably a bit more cutting edge, and will get a lot of people (non namers especially) turning up their noses at it as an ugly old man name. But it's one of the names I predict will be chart climbing within a few years. Use it now and I think you'd be ahead of trends.
Colin is nice and would probably get a mostly positive response. It's a good name that isn't too common, but is still easily recognized by most people.
I don't mind either. I have a cousin called Martin, but I love Colin Meloy of The Decemberists... I don't know, you have to make them work with a good middle name.
I guess I should have mentioned that my 18 month old son's name is George. How's that for an old man name compared to Colin or Martin :) I don't mind if the name is a little dated as long as the kid won't be teased. What I really don't like is super-popular names where you end up having 3 Chloe's in a class or something.
>Martin makes me think of an old man worse than George or not? We already have a son named George. I am not a native speaker so I don't have the feeling for such nuances.
Now George doesn't sound middle aged to me at all - it sounds fine for any age! I guess it's weird how people's perceptions of these things are different depending on people they've known and such. I agree about the super-popular names thing though. Best to go for something timeless.
I think I like Martin more. But I have a friend who has an almost one-year-old named Martin and I have to admit when I first heard that was his name is sounded like an old name for a baby.
How are you pronouncing Colin? Is is Co-lin (Co as in Co-ed - only example I can think of! As in Collin Powell if that helps) or Caw-lin (Caw to rhyme with 'saw' more like Coll-in). In the UK it's the latter pronounciation which I prefer.
I don't mind the J. We would have to pick some middle name other than James I suppose. My biggest issue is that we already have 2 Jacks in the family - FIL & BIL.

Colin sounds like "colon". Lots of people think it's a funny-sounding name b/c of that.
