So there's been a trend as of late for girls given traditionally boy names, but there's this one I've heard recently that just bugs me. There's a girl in nursing school with me named Dustin. I don't know if it just bothers me because that's my fiance's name, so it seems extra ridiculous or what.

What do we think of this?

I don't consider myself a girly-girl but I do like things that are feminine, and I guess that extends to my taste in names. Heavily masculine names just don't seem attractive on girls to me. I imagine Dustin's mom was quite the tomboy when she was a kid and is expecting her girl will refuse all things ribbon and lace as well.

Some of the cross gender names don't seem that bad to me but others just sound very cold and dry and ugly. Like this one.

It depends on the name. I think some have really gone to the girls, at least in my mind (Taylor being the major one that is a girls' name now).

Dustin - ick for a girl. I know a Dustin (a guy) and it's just a guys' name no matter what.

I once knew a girl named Shaun. We'd always have to say "Shaun - the girl" when we talked about her.

I haaaate this trend. Dustin is really bad on a girl. There's a girl named Dustin on The Amazing Race and as soon as I heard it I just rolled my eyes.

There's a Dustin on the current season of The Amazing Race (which happens to be my favorite show)... awful... at least her friend calls her "Dee" like 90% of the time!

I hate it on a guy, despise it on a girl.

Er, dustbin, mate - don't want to confuse the yanks! ;)

I agree with the above - I hate it on a guy, despise it on a girl.

I know a girl named Dustin but she goes by Dusty. When she enrolled in college, they put her in the boys' dorm.

I don't like it on a girl at all.

Wow, I don't like it at all! I also don't like Toby for a girl which I just heard of recently. That just seems like a boys name to me.

If I were her, I'd go by Dusty.
