What does everyone think of the name Mia?
My fiance loves the name Mirah and I don't so I'm trying to think of a name that's sort of similar to that while being different enough for me to like. Mirah seems like an old lady name to me and also makes me think "Mirror Mirror on the wall..."

(we're not pregnant or TTC we just like to talk about baby names)

Mia is ok. I have a bad association with it, so I don't really like it. But I'm sure it's a fine name, outside of my own experience. I do really like the name Maya though, which is also similar.

Mira/Mirah is ok. I never thought about the mirror thing before, but you're right, it does sound like that. However, what I always hear is "mira!" like the command "look!" in Spanish. It's one of the few Spanish words I know. I always seem to hear little kids saying that. "Mira Mama, mira!!!" "Mira aqui!"

Hmm, well I think the word "mirror" probably stems from "mira" as in, to look, so in a way, you do associate the name with the word/s!

And I agree with the poster about the name Mirah, and it also does very much sound like an old lady name. She'd have to have dyed maroon hair and thick black framed glasses.

Not 'to look'...rather the command form, like 'Look!'. Still, I think it's fine and I speak Spanish.

I like Mia, I like it with Sara as the middle name... Mia Sara.

Like the person who commented above me, when I hear Mirah, I hear it as "Mira," as in "Look."

I didn't! There was a little girl at the school where I teach by that name last year. I wonder if her parents got it from one of those places...

I like Mia. it's short and sweet so it's kinda timeless to me. I can see it being a fitting name for almost any generation as well as for any age on the person bearing the name!

I think the name is growing in popularity, and is quite a popular name at the moment.

Australian actress Bec Cartright (who married Aussie tennis player Leyton Hewitt) named her daughter Mia, who was born abotu 12 months ago.

My bosses oldest daughter (9) is also named Mia.

I like Mia and Mirah. How about Mila, Mina, Amira(h), or mariah?

I don't like Mia, but love Mira (don't care for the H). My sister is a Mira, has always been the only one in her calss, and is gorgeous and extremely bright. I also like Mila, and Moira, but hate Maya.

I've never liked Mia. Not sure why, I just don't care for it.

I used to babysit a little girl named Milah. That name's grown on me since. And I love Maya/Maia.

There's a singer I like named Mirah. I like Mirah better than Mia. In my experience (with naming pets) choosing a name that makes you think of something isn't bad because that wears off. I've never heard of an old woman named Mirah.

[identity profile] elsh.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, I just discovered her music, like yesterday. :)

It doesn't necessarily have to be after her, but I know what you mean, kinda. My husband doesn't like me naming pets celebrities' names. Obviously things like Sara are fine, but the ones that are more unique, no.

It's all right. I don't hate it. It does make me think of Kate Winslet (her daughter) which is good!

if he likes mira, maybe he'll like Kira since it rhymes and all.

I def like Mia more than Mirah. Its so cute!!

Ps: the hubby and I arnt going to be TTC for a few years now, but we still discuss baby names on a regular basis, lmao. I guess its a couples thing.

[identity profile] danacarlesays.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao, we did the same thing!!

Congrats though, esp with upcoming nuptuals! Plus, it sounds like you may be TTC before we do; we're waiting for him to get out of the military, get a job back home and a house for us all. Its gonna take at least 2 years, so Im getting all excited hahaha.

I love Mia. It's on my list. Mirah...I also think "mirror mirror".

I love both Mia and Mira, which is my dogs name.

One of the stylists at the salon I worked at used Mia as a nickname for Melissa and I loved it.
Maybe you could find a totally different "M" name that has Mia for a possible nickname?

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-11-14 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Mia is sweet, but VERY popular. I'd never use it for that reason.

Well, I don't know very many children, but my 7 year old niece has a girl on her soccer team called Mia (possibly as a nn though) and I do know a girl who is 20 named Mia.
